The insurance company will not give two hoots about your stainless doodads or brand new that.

Did your insurance policy state like for like in any total loss claim?

I can appreciate how frustrating this has been for, however you did tell them you wanted the vehicle disposed of.
And probably much more important it is just a car after all, no one was hurt, seriously or otherwise.

Grab a beer and chillax a bit.

Im could end up a £1000 out of pocket through no fault of my own.
Hardly something to chill out about is it unless your rolling in money?
Some people, obviously not you, work their socks off just to make ends meet.
I suppose I could give up working and claim benefits. Get you rich people to pay my mortgage whilst I look after my disabled daughter.
But no, I try to do the right thing and get screwed over by some policy.
So what is market value of a 3rd Gen Surf? Should I go to a dealer and say im sorry but you cant sell that car at £3600 because its not market value? I dont think so!

The insurance company may not give two hoots about my car but I do and im determined to see it through to the end.

                Take the money!

                Beachsurfer..........
Did your insurance policy say "market value" (I assume it did).
In which case, whatever you do, how ever hard you try, they will only give you their view of market value. You've signed a contract with them and that's all their bound to do. However they aren't bound to offer you the salvage so you're already getting more than they're contractually bound to offer you.
So to repeat my previous advice (from hard personal experience)
                • Ask them what they use to determine market value.
                • Get a look at that document
                • Assuming their offer tallies with the book, take the money and the salvage, use the money to fix the car (if the damage is all you say it is you could do it twice for that much)
                • Put the whole sorry mess down to experience

Any other approach is a waste of effort - I promise you

Its this "market value" thing that screws it all up. "Book" price is not necessarily market value, but I'm sure that insurers will deem that it is and that's it. What is market value anyway? I don't have a clue. Is it what a trader will pay for something that he wishes to sell on at a profit? Is it what you will pay the trader for it ? Is it somewhere in between ? Who decides? The insurer I suppose.

Having read all the posts, cos I'm good like that, I personally would take the money and the salvage and repair the Surf. It would mean that you wouldn't have to change, or pay someone to change all the parts that you already have on the car.
You obviously know and trust the car mechanically, and if it is repaired properly you would have your car back as it was. If you are going to be the one to use it, who gives a toss what category it is.
Check with your chosen insurers, Tesco or otherwise, that they would be happy to insure the car after it is properly repaired.
As Mr Tallis said, you can waste a lot of effort trying to make insurance companies see it from your moral viewpoint because they are, like everything else these days, run by accountants. They don't give a shit about you or anyone else!
I know you feel put upon, but imho get your Surf repaired and back on the road. Lower your expectations of our wonderful system because I very much doubt if you'll beat it!

                        Ok point by point.
It was not a personal attack on you

How exactly are you going to be £1000 out of pocket?

I was suggesting that you chill out as getting anger very rarely sorts anything out, ranting and raving on a forum, may, perhaps be your way of resolving issues, I don't know if that works?

                        I hardly see how my work status or my work ethic is relevant, I personally find it is better to work smarter than harder.But as you seem this is pertinent to your insurance claim here is my average working day;
Most days I am on the road for 0630 and don't get home till gone 6pm.
Not working my socks off by any means but I do my fair share.
I would not consider myself to be rich ? financially probably not, but there is way more to life than money.
If you choose to give up work that is entirely up to you , however you may find that along with your now increased risk, ie your present claim, that many insurance companies will see your unemployment as a greater risk.

With regards to your pay out from the claim, it is up to you to either accept or dispute the amount.
If you have evidence, actual or anecdotal then that should have been presented.
Surprising at it seems I do actually agree with the premise of your argument, I would suggest that your particular claim has not reached the standards that you were hoping for.

But I say again the insurance company will not care about how much you cared for the vehicle. They will see a value for what they think it is worth and will fight to ensure that they will not pay out any money more than that.

3rd gens are available within your payout range for instance

I hope you can conclude this episode to your satisfaction.

Take the money from Tesco, and the truck, and you are £2,200 better off. You will need to spend some of it to get a good repair done, but you may still end up with £1,000 in your pocket, and your truck, with all the stuff on it you keep mentioning.

Strikes me you want over £3,000 from Tesco AND the truck back....don't be silly or greedy, take the truck back and the money, sort it so it works again, and put it all behind you, and go to Adrian Flux or someone for the insurance.

                                Nice colour, that.

                                Even Vince has one.

Dragon has to add £50 to it.
