    Newbie wanting to replace stolen Surf

    Hi guys

    I'm new here, first permitted post in this forum only apparently.

    Reason for joining is to ask a couple of Qs as I consider what to replace my stolen Surf with. It was nicked from outside my house in Auckland a couple of weeks ago and I was gutted. Partly because it was a trusty old workhorse (1994) and partly because I had replaced the 3L V6 with the Lexus 4L V8 - so it was a joy to drive as well as being a great 2nd car to lug around all my boating kit, sails, dinghies etc.

    I see no point in replacing it with another 3L V6 because after my 4L V8 it will feel like going backwards. So more likely a turbo diesel. Which brings me to first Q:

    Q1. How much difference will I notice from the inter-cooled vs standard turbo diesel versions?

    The other Q is about carrying capacity. Because for the same money, here in Auckland I can buy a 2000-2002 Range Rover Vogue 4.6 V8 with similar mileage. Which is a bit tempting but I am concerned about reliability and load carrying capacity. So I want to compare the boot dimensions of a RR with a late 90s Surf. I came across this thread:

    which seems to answer my Q but the measurements do vary a bit. Bushwakers answers in inches don't quite match Baz94's answers in cm (working on 2.54 cm per inch).

    Q2. So can anyone confirm the boot dimensions of a late 90s Surf for me, please?

      Thanks, there's reasonable choice here in NZ but you do pay quite a lot more for the inter-cooled turbo diesel vs standard.

      Anyone able to comment on how much difference IC makes in driving?

      And also the load dimensions of the boot would be great?

        If the Range Rover is the P38 version then the electronics are unreliable (body electronics module under the passenger seat and fuse box in the engine bay give trouble) and the chassis will likely be rusty.... I love 'em but they're rubbish....google them then give up the idea.

          Yeah the P38s have issues so I'm considering options between a very late 3rd Gen Surf (because I dislike the body shape of the 4th generation) or a very late P38 (2001/2) or an early L322 Range Rover (2003/4). I know the Surf will likely give me better reliability but the RR offers more passenger space and refinement - when it's working. And because its a 2nd car if it does break I'm not stranded without any vehicle. A decision of heart vs mind!

            Run away from the P38 as fast as you possibly can, and if you get a 322 hope it never needs an alternator or turbo (on the diesel).
            The surf will last longer and if it does need fixing it won't leave you homeless and eating from a soup kitchen like the RR's will.

              I did look at the p38s but when you read up and go on there own forums god its frightening ,id go for a landcruiser ive had the 4.2 100 series it was awesome

                  Yep, plenty of risks but it is going to be a 2nd (weekend) car alongside my BMW as a main car - so if it does hiccup it's not fatal. And here in NZ a 1998 diesel Surf with 150,000 km is 50% more expensive than a 2000 Vogue with the same mileage. That extra cash will pay for quite a lot of extra maintenance!

                  But back to my original question can anyone tell me how much difference the intercooler makes to driving the turbo diesel Surf, the late 90s models. Because they are still in the running if I can find a good one. But the IC versions are selling for a big premium over standard versions.

                      I could but I'd rather buy a factory original if it's worth it. But so far nobody can tell me what the difference is in driving experience so I don't know if it is worth it!
