  • Aerial retraction

    Folks,

on my 3.0l Gen 3 with the aerial on the passenger side wing...The aerial goes up and down ok but does not fully retract in to the wing.

Is this normal or is a replacement in order.

BTW I removed it and reinserted to no effect.

    Cheers + ATVB

I had a similar thing happen on my soarer and it was due to a small kink(bend) in the biggest (bottom) section of the aerial this caused the aerial to stick in the housing, if it is this then a gentle pressure with the hand opposite to the kink(bend) may solve the problem. Strangely enough the one in the surf has just given up the ghost the drive wire has separated from the metal aerial , so permanently up at the moment. Bitches to fit new aerial with that inner wing cover.

      Stupid Aerial

Same issues with my Gen 3 aerial - it actually started behaving itself after installation of new ICE, well sort of........up until this morning it would fully extend/retract when switched on/off via the ign (key) but continued to have a mind of its own when switched on/off via the head unit.

This morning all had reverted back to half up & half down again - it's as if the voltage is being cut before the cycle has completed, I can hear the click as it switches on/off during operation.

Have any of you tried WD40'ing the mast?

We used to do that at BMW 25 years back...dirt gets stuck on the lube and creates a lot of resistance....worth a shot.

P.S. If you do it, hold a rag behind the mast or you'll cover your truck in oil.

It's not sticking Andy - it won't go fully up or down, even with assistance.

Is say it was more of a limit switch issue.

Don't the teeth strip off on the gears?

I put mine on a switch as it is rarely used, as I was fed up of catching it on carpark roofs and trees..

            WD-40 helped mine too.

Just to be clear it goes up and down ok when I switch the radio on and off.

But, when I switch the radio off about 9 inches of aerial remains sticking up out of the wing.

Should the aerial go all the way down flush (ish) to the wing or not ?

                Cheers + ATVB

I cut the wire that controls the electric antenna (form and aftermarket head unit) and stuck a switch in it!

Was that prior to or after the OEM switch control?....I ask this because I can clearly hear the voltage being cut by some form of switch unit/relay coming from somewhere underneath the head unit.

REALLY not at all convinced that my issue is down to the aerial, I can hear the damn thing switching off..........looks like I'm going to have to pull the fascia again & investigate
