  • Wheel bearing question

I got new wheel bearings for Maggie's CRV and it they came with a card that when held to one side of each bearing it shows them to be magnetic.

Why would one side of a bearing be magnetic?
It may become apparent when I fit them but at the moment it seems strange.

    ABS.
The magnetic side needs to be clean and facing the brake disc.

That's new one on me, why is that?

        Ah makes sense now!

The ABS has been acting up a bit lately, coming on at low speeds when the ground is a bit uneven, with the bearing having excess play this would account for that.

Can do if the bearing is moving too much or if the old ring is moving at a different speed as it will have little magnetic points round it the the sensor reads
well, that was a bad idea!

Also the magnetic side needs to face the cv joint not disc
well, that was a bad idea!

I may be a bit out of date, but 25 years ago *cough* when I knew stuff, the toothed ring for the ABS cut through a magnetic field at the sensor and induced 5 volts in it, those pulses told the brain how fast the wheel was moving. hence clearance to the sensor and it being clean were vital....

Correct but irrelevant in this type
well, that was a bad idea!
