Depends on how many/much stuff you need to carry. Thought of Volvo?
      Non intercooled nothing.

I think an Audi A4 is too small for what I want, as is a C class. Looking at A8, E Class and GS at the moment. But I won't be buying any time soon.

Yeah, looked at SC(?)90s, but I really dislike the interiors of Volvos, always have. That centre bit looks like a TV remote controller.

Nowadays I think of 'economical' as anything that does over 60mpg and a 'guzzler' as something that does under 20mpg. What are you prepared to accept in terms of mpg and what speed are you prepared to stick to on the motorway? I'm sure you appreciate that you can boot lumps out of a VW Polo Diesel and get a worse mpg than carefully driving any modern 2 litre vehicle. What is the approximate timeframe for purchase? If you wait long enough (but perhaps not in our lifetime) you might get something that runs on cold fusion, giving unlimited power and economy.

You need to be more specific when stating your requirements. Perhaps you could state deadline for purchase, required mpg at an average motorway speed, maximum cabin noise in decibels when using a specific tyre, volume of storage space in cubic metres with / without roof bars, leather / alcantara / faux leather / cloth finish, paint finish and colour, and all other required driver and passenger options.

I'm sure a man like yourself, who, if your post history is anything to go by, detests non-specificity, will appreciate the need of avoiding falling into the trap of asking a question that inevitably demands the reply 'it depends'.

Thanks for your input. I'll answer the points that are relevant to my original request. I'll ignore the bits that are mere opinion or attempts to be antagonistic.

                  Nothing pastel or green.

                        Subaru?
I understand suspension is a bit stiff.

Would be the only thing that was stiff...

I don't believe I've ever asked for advice on buying a car.

Fair play that you have but if YOU don't know what you want, how on earth are we supposed to?

Try google, not a forum for Surf enthusiasts.

Here's my advice, buy a surf.

And if you want to mix it with me crack on.

Why would I 'mix' with you?
