Rear brake backing plate urgently required

The outer weather shields on my truck have also rusted through and with the MoT due in April how bad do they have to be to fail the Mot? Holes about 4" from the handbrake return spring mounts.
If I remove the half shaft to simplify working on the backplates do I need to remove any of the bearings? Also, asked Toyota about back plates and they seemed uninterested and quoted approx £400 per side. Looking for a cheap solution, had the truck for 11 years and now getting to old (me) to pull things around etc.

To be brutally honest, you need to stop being tight/hope the problem will go away/be overlooked, and sort out some replacement parts. Mot inspectors are increasingly more regulation governed and less able to self interpret the rules for themselves, (as in no discretion!) They ain't going to get their arse kicked for you!!!
