  • Timing belt kits

    Folks

When the time comes I plan to get a kit rather than just a belt and the option seems to be a Toyota kit at around £110 or copy kit at around £60 !

Obviously an important item in our service schedule but is the Toyota option twice as good and the definitive better option ?

Very many thanks for any opinions.

Get a Toyota one or a gates one. Gates is as good and make the kits for the manufacturers.
well, that was a bad idea!

A half hour job you can easily do yourself so buy quality and do it properly.

I got mine from roughtrax, always good quality gear & super fast delivery.

I have looked at the various tutorials on here and youtube and while it does look like a logical job I think as a timing belt virgin and mechanical novice I will allow an hour at least for this....

First I think the seal on the AT sump is in need of replacement as I have a tiny ATF leak / fluid present so that will be the next job as the timing belt is not due for a few thousand km. I want to get the rev counter working too but that is not urgent...

I need to buy a torque wrench first.

I shall go for a Toyota original too.

                  Cheers + ATVB

Doesn't anyone here replace crank, cam and other seal in the timing cover for the pump when doing a timing belt. Makes it a much longer job than a half hour I hear everyone can do, especially as the air con bracket has to be removed to do the cam seal.

                    Nev.

I did check for leaks when I did my belt but all was well so I left it because knowing my luck I'd have changed the seals & ended up with a dozen leaks.

Fair enough but I always do all the seals. One thing I might add is I always use genuine seals. Use any other and you probably will have leaks.

                          Idler pulley (NSK or KOYO?)

I also need to change the timing belt belt on my 3rd gen, I looked at the 3.0L engine cam belt kit on roughtrax

cam belt and tensioner are genuine but the idler pulley is not, I'm not sure of the manufacturer but roughtrax tell me it uses a NSK bearing (they change supplier from time to time).

I believe KOYO supply toyota, would NSK be considered a good alternative?

I've seen KOYO part numbers quoted on the site but I'm not sure if they are for the 2.4/2.8 or 3.0

                          KOYO Idler pulley - 54TM030B01

Can anyone confirm if this is the correct part number for a 96 3rd GEN?

                          Thanks

54TM030B01 is the L series idler. Take a look here for the 13505-67050 Toyota part number and there will be other manufacturer part numbers -

                            http://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&rc...,d.aGc&cad=rja

Unfortunately there is no Koyo, NSK, NTN or SKF number just a GMB which would be ok or some other I know nothing about.

Another possibility is a HYE Idler - BT-12052 (Taiwanese origin with Japanese NSK Bearings)
