How about a Daihatsu FourTrak? No idea how good they are, but they look like little tanks, very square, I think of them as having character 2.8 engine, in a fairly small vehicle, should be pretty capable all round, but you'd have to be careful of rust, I went to see one for £400 up the road from me, and I did a little research, rust in the back can be a problem, lifted up the carpet in the boot and I could put my arm through both sides, if I could weld I reckon I would have had it and cut the floor out of the boot and welded a new section in.
£1300...

Cheers Diezel!
The one I put a link to was just the first one that appeared on the list and was sub 2k, looking amongst them I didn't realise they do quite new ones, a couple of them were from the year 2000, also they're some with leather seats if that's your thing
I'm half tempted to try and put a few quid a side and see if I can spot another cheap one (£500ish) locally and grab it as my off road toy
My Surf is too nice to scratch/dent up, before anyone asks why I don't use that off road! :P
