I want to run 2 different make wireless routers in my house.
My internet comes in on a cat5 cable from a neighbours house.
It then goes into a wireless router in my garage.
2 cables run from this router, to 2 desktop computers.
Can I put the 2nd wireless router at the end of one of these cables then come out and go to the desktop & and have wireless at a 2nd location?

When I do this it all sort of goes slow.
The routers are on different I.P addresses,
I tried disabling DHCP on the second router, everything works fine apart from the wireless from that router.

You can but you need to make sure your 2nd router is able to. Cant remember the exact wording for doing this though.

I seem to have it going now, I re enabled it but had to mess around with the speed and duplex settings.

It will probably stop working tomorrow

One won't cover the whole house.

Still here, still trying. I've updated all me network card drivers, seems to have solved it.

Because the house has 3 floors and has thick concrete floors and rock for some of the walls.
Where the first wireless point is downstairs, It only reaches downstairs and partially onto the first floor, by putting one up on the 3rd floor I now have total coverage.
It isn't practical to put the wireless on the middle floor, although that would be a good solution.

Makes sense now. I would have said put it in the middle but never mind.

Other than that, invest in a better router?

                    Have you thought about Homeplugs?

I have just bought another two for about £14 each for my laptop and family computer, which have been on wifi

Depending on the make and model of the second router, it may be possible to put it into "access-point-only" mode. This means it does not route at all, removing a lot of complications.

You will then have two SSIDs that operate independently but are attached to the same LAN:

                      Wireless-Network-1 (password1)
                      Wireless-Network-2 (password2)

You can then configure both of these SSIDs and passwords on your laptops / mobile devices. Roaming between the two access points will involve a disconnect and reconnect but it's probably the easiest way to work with what you have.

just had to do this myself this morning.

this was the method i used and no hassle at all...

i know it says netgear but its the same principle.

Cheers Bob, I looked but couldn't find an explanation like that.
For something that seemed a simple idea got complicated fast.

Still, this week I'm going to set up port forwarding.

                          onwards and upwards!

i have both ssid's set the same with same password so you just move from one network to another... without interruption...
