That's a primer ....it's goes stiff due to the pressure you have pumped into the fuel.

If plunger on the top of the fuel filter housing is going stiff when i pump it what does that mean and how do i fix it?

If it has a fuel heater there will be wiring on and around the filter housing. No fuse or relay in the engine bay fuse box usually means it's not installed.
Do check the glow plugs and their fuse. If voltage is ok then remove all glow plugs, inspect and check for resistance. Voltage to them means nothing if they have very high resistance. Don't lose the insulators and remember the correct installed positions.
You may need someone to help you with the glow plug removal. Be very gentle when taking them out. Old glow plugs can have a lot of carbon on the ends and may break off in the head, if not handled correctly.

Not a good sign. The whole point of the fuse is to blow in the event of a short circuit in the glow plug circuit. There's lots of current available in that circuit - certainly enough to cause smoke, fire and pain.
You need to check for volts on your glow plug rail when you turn on ignition now then. I don't know whether you're capable of this or not, so it may be best to enlist local help if you're not - and replace the home made 'fuse' with a proper one.
It could still always be fuel if glowplugs are functioning properly. Is the plunger on the top of the fuel filter housing going stiff when you pump it?

Fuel heater ? Doubt if you have one. The Guy made up a fuse ? That sort of thing needs to be right. You know the fuse may go at any time, Have you visually inspected the fuse ?

i dont think its my fuse as the guy i got it off seems to have made his own fuse and stuck it in to the fuse socket :/
have had the car 3 years now and this is the first bit of hassle i have had with it

is there anyway of checking if my glow plugs are ok can i use a 9v battery to see do they heat up?

More than likely Glow plug fuse, It protects the Glow Plugs from over current. Check it first as they are a bit pricey. Look under bonnet drivers side fuse box. Its not straight forward to change as it needs to be unbolted. Good luck..

hilux surf kzn wont start oil Heater fuse?
hey every one hope this finds you well.My hilux surf 1995 wouldn't start this morning. Its a jap import.
Every morning in the cold it takes a few goes to start (blows a few smoke rings)but today nothing.
I was wondering if it might be the oil heater fuse? i have had a look and there is no fuse in the fuse insert.
as i had to get a lift to work i have not been able to check to see if there is a fuel heater installed. Not that i know much about the car but i have had a look at some old posts.
normally i put a bit of diptane into the fuel but the local shop where i get it from have been out for a few weeks will this help in anyway?
A buddy of mine works next to halfords and has gone in to see is there a fuse for me and they have a 40amp hef559 is this any good if i have a heater installed?Last edited by ronanconway; 15 January 2013, 11:15.Tags: None
