  • Jerry can spout in my fuel filler pipe

I was filling up with a jerry can earlier on. I had to use one of these spouts from halfords because i just cant pour it in without one on my surf.

When i had finished, i took it out and the black plastic nozzle that was in the end....was not on the end anymore

I had a look with a torch and it was teetering in the edge about to fall down into the tank, tried to get it with a bit of wire but it disappeared down the pipe.

So i now have a seizable piece of plastic either stuck in the filler pipe somewhere or in the tank.

I'm sort of amused by this as it's not really my fault as far as i can tell (halfords crappy spout) and i have no idea what to do next.

It drove home ok, not sure what will happen when i try to fill up next but i guess that will answer the question of where it is, filler pipe or tank.

Has anyone got any idea's on how to get into the tank to have a look for it?

It makes filling a pain, the fuel backs up and switches the pump off.

Mine was like it for years, I just filled up slowly.

I only sorted mine when I sold the truck, as the guy was a fussy bugger....

If you have a body lift its easy to get the filler hoses off, its a bit fiddly on a stock truck. You shouldn't need to get into the tank, it'll be in the bend on the filler pipe.

phew, i'm glad it's not just me

So you think it will be ok, just a bit slow to fill up, i can live with that as i don't have a body lift.

I googled around and this seems to have happened to some other people as well, it's pretty bad that halfords are flogging these things without at least glueing the plastic on

Just chuck the plastic bit in the bin when you get it out of the pipe! I recently changed the filler pipe on my truck as the fuel I put in mostly ended up on the filling station forecourt. Its a bit of a puzzle to get it out and in like! If you can get the tank end rotated to point at the rear of the vehicle the filler end should pull through and the whole lot comes out for under the car.

To be totally honest with you mate i'm just going to leave it in unless it causes a problem.

I don't really know where to start in trying to get the filler pipe out. Presumably i'd need to drop the tank and that does not leave me with a warm feeling.

Just seen this, too little too late, but thought about this when I bought the filler add on and drilled and riveted the plastic extension piece to the metal spout.

Not that this will help you, but I can't help the embarrassingly smug feeling that I have. Sorry

              yeah thanks for that

A little drop of super glue would have prevented this, i simply never considered that the #######s would not have attached it, at all, in anyway, considering the seriousness and expenses that could be caused by it falling off.

I'm in two minds about taking it back to halfords and invoicing them for a mechanic to sort i out.

But i cant face trying to explain it all to the 16 year old girl on the till.

              Anyway, so far so good.

Hopefully someone else will read this one day and glue theirs on before it falls off.

Could you try a Mission Impossible style grappling hook on a wire or string in case it's still in the lower part of the filler pipe? On the other hand, that could end up in there too!

Actually that's not a bad idea, i'm going to try one of these

Does anyone know how long the filler pipe is?, i assume that it has settled at the bottom on some type of grill type filter because i was able to fill up today but very, very slowly

Could do with some info on the length and general size and shape of the filler pipe so that i can make sure the screw grabber is long enough / able to get around the twists and turns

                      sorry for that massive image

I can get a flexible claw that is about 900mm long, do you think that is enough?

Also, do you think this is a dangerous proposition?

Wot ya need is an "endiscope", pop along to your nearest hospital and ask if you could borrow theirs for a sec, it got a camera and a grapple on it, jobs a goodun!, beware, when my missis had it done she got a bloodshot and a black eye so you may want to give your truck some sedation first just to relax it
seriously tho if it fills up ok then i wouldn't bother, if it gets into the tank it should't be a problem, just annoying it's in there,
you could take the truck to halfrauds and get the manager out and tell him the get the bl00dy thing out or else he's going to your local hospital
my son got a great device from the internet for transferring fuel from a jerry can to the tank, it clamps on the can and has a manual pump and a hose, ya just stick the hose in your filler neck and give it a couple of pumps and the whole can full is transferred, saves all that hoisting a full jerry at sholder height,
Too young to die and too old to give a toss

Yeah i tried a hand pump but it was so hard to pump it was useless. I used 50/50 veg oil mix which just does not work with the syringe type pumps.

I wanted an oil drum style wind up pump but they need a seal i think and i have a variety of containers that i want to pump out of.

The joys of using your own fuel eh.

I'm going to try and get it out as soon as this grabber thing arrives, the problem is that it takes about 15 minutes to fill up at the moment. Not a major problem but one i could do without.
