do all gen 3's have a center dif ? and dif lock or is just certain models

Early ones might just have the 2nd gen transfer box - or to put it another way, a locked diff effect whenever you engage 4 wheel drive.

3rd gens with multimode (centre diff) have a display in centre dash indicating the status of the 4x4 system. Early non centre diff types don't. Also, the gear lever and 4x4 selector lever are switched over compared to 2nd gen / early 3rd gen type.

Non diff lock ones have 3 positions on transfer lever and diff ones have 5 I think.
well, that was a bad idea!

It's a centre diff, not diff lock, which in the OPs head is a locking rear diff going by what he has written/asked.

3rd gens don't have locking rear diffs as standard.

Nope, 3rd Gens are available in Multimode (with a center diff to give you AWD) or Part Time 4wd systems, in any year.

Like Yoshie said, don't get an axle locker confused with the Transfer case one. Any 4x4 with a Center diff MUST have a way of locking it, otherwise its just AWD, and you'll never have proper 4WD.

No Surf came with a rear locker as standard.
