  • Advice on :cough: other 4x4s...

    Keeping my Surf, naturally.

But Mrs.' faithful Saab 9-5 estate is going to be taken round the back of the barn and given both barrells soon. Things are going to need fixing that will cost more than the car is worth. Been looking to see what 10-12K gets you.

She doesn't want another Surf, wants something newer. MPG not as important as staving off catastrophic mechanical failure bills. The Saab only does 21 mpg around town anyway (2.3 Aero 9-5). Will need space for kids and camping stuff / bikes.

    Narrowed it down to:

Rangie (she's always wanted one, obviously new they are daft money)
Mate's mate has a business putting new gearboxes in these. That's not a good sign, is it? But you do seem to get a lot for the money when used, if you get the right model.

Disco (05 onwards). Looks good. Shame they all seem to have EGR and turbo problems... Pricey too.

Nissan Pathfinder 2.5. The consensus seems to be they are less refined than the posher competition but cheaper and more reliable. I can live with that.

    Scooby Forester. As above. Thirsty.

Audi Allroad. I like the A6 version, and I am told the 3.0D is the one to have. Bit of a hoity-toity vibe though? Not that reliable either.

Anyone run any of the above or can offer decent advice?

Patrols are just toooooo big. Gotta get it in that multistorey in Tenby, Vince, without putting some deep stripes on the roof

Took my 2nd gen truck in the multi in Tenby - that was tight. Both aerials twanging off the concrete beams
Cutting steps in the roof of the world

You, on the other hand are rational and looking at all the options, before your Mrs decides she actually will get the RR.

TBH though, for a punt on a half decent ride, If MPG is not a problem, and the RR is "relatively" new, I'd probably opt for that as well.

Keep the miles down and you should be fine. If she's gonna mega mile it, get something as new as possible that's cheap to repair.

Not really technical advice, but I'd go for the Rangie. If she's always wanted one, she'll always want one when she's plodding around in her Nissan.

You could look at a Range Rover Sport too. A tarted up Disco, so kind of a compromise between the two.

Yes, the one next to Sainsbury's. Great value for money. Not everywhere as cynically priced as England

RR sports are too much £. Bit "Footballer's Wife" too.

From my experience of working on RR and discovery steer clear of anything with air suspension its nothing but trouble the compressors fail all the time ,and the repair bill can be in the 4 digits !! With the discoverys the discovery 3 the alternators are common for failing as are front wheel bearing, egr valves and the rear upper suspension arms bushes wear out but you can't buy the bushes so you have to buy whole arm .I have done about 5 or 6 of these arms and they never get easier they are very labour intensive to replace as all the bolts seize in and involve a lot of cutting and grinding to remove. Sorry for rambling on just thought I would share all the info I have to help you make your decision. Have you considerd a lancruiser amazon ? They a loaded with all the gadgets and I look after a couple with high mileage one has done almost 200k and apart from genral wear and tear items the biggest thing I have had to repalce on one of them was some ac pipes for the rear good luck
Always up to my neck in it

I used to work for a landy specialist year's ago and could not wait to get out of there! Rusty bolts on everything and nothing built with common sense!!! Sick of doing the same things day in day out. Back then it was clutches, transfer boxes, gear boxes, heads and cv joints and seals. Just starting to forget how to do them now Stick with jap stuff
