Speaking as one of the few to have owned one (indeed, one of the few have actually driven one..), that's about the going rate. They are thirsty, pushing 20 mpg on a good day but petrol is cheaper than diesel and the diesels are hardly frugal. Gaskets can be a bit dodgy but that's fixable.
Personally, I would put the v6 way above the 2.4 and on a par with the 3.0 unless you're looking to do some serious towing or off roading. As a driving experience, the extra response from the v6 is welcome. Find a manual and they are actually quite quick and relatively economical. The big weakness in terms of economy for surfs (other than being massive) is the very in efficient auto box.
