  • Help Needed - 2nd Gen Rear Axle Fix

    Hi Everyone

It's been a while...in May, me and my misses headed off in our 3L 2nd Gen KZN-130 Surf to drive around the world. We got as far as Mongolia and received news that both my parents had been diagnosed with Cancer and so we had to head straight back.

As a result we drove through half of Mongolia a bit faster than we probably should have and managed to crack/shear the main weld that holds the upper right hand side trailing arm onto the rear axle.

The crack is actually through the axle and oil is leaking out, along with a nasty metallic whine. As we were in a hurry home, we strapped it up good with a heavy duty ratchet strap and kept a close eye on it. It made the 9000 mile trip home.

The car is currently in Dorset and needs some serious TLC.

We're after a Surf oracle who could help either repair or swap the rear axle. Either way, a weld job or swap will mean the rear axle will more than likely have to come off. We don't really have the space or the confidence/knowhow to do it.

Obviously we can pay for any help, parts, etc

We're also keen to replace all the bushes and a few other things that took a battering as well as whip out the air-con.

If anyone can help please get in contact. Msg me here or call 07784306723, or email aroundtheworldin800days@mail.c om. The car is drivable, but somewhere in the South would be preferred.

    Many thanks

    Andy and Emma

      Rear Axle Needed

I have spoken to Tony and we have fixed a rough date for the new year to sort the axle. All we need now is a rear axle for a 2nd Gen 3.0L surf. The axle code is G294 which I think translates to a differential size of 8.0", final ratio of 4.1, and a 4 pinion set up. This ratio number is found on the VIN plate in the engine bay.

After my first post an incredibly helpful fella called John (from up North somewhere) called me, he had one, but I've lost your number. Please get in touch again.

If anyone else has one up for grabs please let me know.

      Thanks

      Andy

Is the axle made of cast steel, or Iron ? I am not to sure. I can supply you with some very good quality Eutectic welding rods foc if its any help. Just remember when welding cast never do a run any longer than ten times the dia of the rod, and pean the weld after every stop as the weld will cool at a different ratio to the parent metal.

Hi Webbo, I'd rather replace the whole lot as I suspect something may have been knocked out of line a little. The car is going to take another battering soon and so I'm keen to swap the whole lot out. It would need to come out to be welded anyway, so it kind of makes sense....

I'm still earning some Scout badges as far as adventuring goes!

Hi Muddle, tried him first, both have gone. The hunt resumes! Cheers for the suggestion, anymore out there?

Sounds good sjoe, any chance you can confirm the ratio number which is found on the VIN plate in the engine bay and should match ours (G294). A few models had different axle ratios.

Also any chance of a photo to aroundtheworldin800days@mail.c om just so I can see the deal with the third member and what is included?

                    Cheers
