  • Advice on carrying ladders on roof rack pls

    I've got these rails

and 2 clamp on cross members... but they don't have any "stop" ends on them to stop a ladder from slipping off...

Anyone use or know of what fitting I would need before I start trawling Thule sites etc?

I made my own a few years ago after seeing them on a plumber's van.
Just some threaded rod attached to the crossbars with a nut either side and a strip of flat bar with a wingnut to clamp the ladders down. They weren't lockable though.

Yes, I considered that after seeing the products, but for the money, I can "fit and forget"

Now, just need a way of being able to reach them...

I've been using those for about 10 years now, have to say they are a brilliant invention (lockable ones are a must really)

gee, we used to just use bungee cords. then went to small tie downs. no need for stops when its tied to the roof rack.
if you don't want the ladders stolen, don't leave them on overnight.

first bit of advice is to strap it down or it'll slide off when you brake

man who don't tie ladder on roof will lose it...

You can make up a swivel bracket to lock the ladder in place if you got roof bars fitted

I got the ones Vince linked to. Yet to try them out, but assembled them, and they seem sturdy enough. Yellow passivated blah de blah finish too.

Only problem I have now is how do I stop someone nicking my screw/clamp on roof bars at the same time as my ladder....

I have a version of those, too. When the padlock is locked you can't unscrew the clamp, and the clamp keeps the ladders flush to the roofbar. If the roofbar is locked to the vehicle they can't rob the ladders without cutting either the roofbar or the clamp.
