    hi all,

I'm new to Toyota I have had Land rovers before but now fancy a Toyota, could any one advise me on what is the best spec to look for, I want to do some off road and would like to buy a vehicle already to go, I don't really know about the FWD system on Toyota's, are they full time FWD do I need to be looking for something with diff lockers or fitting them.

Thanks for any advise you can offer and is anyone selling anything that might suit me.

    All the best John

Hi John, cant believe you aint had a greeting before now, anyway welcome and enjoy, you best bets a 3rd gen, failing that a 3lt 2nd gen, like anything give it a good going over and history etc, prob unlike landys you wont find much rust ask my son about defenders! new rear chassis etc etc bl00dy fortune every time, he loves it tho

2nd gens dont have full time 4x4, 3rd gens do, but no diff locks (as far as i know,)

Good morning John and welcome. I couldn't give you any advice as I'm more adept at breaking than fixing. The surf is a great motor off road though. My friends are all green oval fans but it keeps up with them execept in the really heavy going and that is more down to the fact that I run All Terrain tyres and not muds as it's a daily use car as well. Enjoy

Hello John. Sorry you didn't get any greetings straight away. At least you waited patiently. Like Ian says, 3rd gen to get a centre diff, or a 3.0 td 2nd gen cause they're a great truck, anyway. Welcome to the forum. Enjoy the fun........

welcome to the H.S.O.C. I have a 3rd gen truck. My trasfer box gear lever has a button on it which when pushed in changes from rear wheel drive to all wheel drive, the transfer box has Hi range 2wd and 4wd facility also H4L which is high range locked diff and LO range locked diff, there is a bit more to it than that but I hope this answers your question.
