  • I've got my Surf!

    Morning folks,

I've been looking at Surfs for sale for almost a year now, only recently got the money together and been able to look with the actual chance of buying. Well I stuck a post up in the Surfs Wanted section on Friday and one of the regulars on here mentioned his Surf might be available. It turned out that he's in Yorkshire and I'm down in Kent, after a bit more browsing on the web I saw there were 3 other Surfs also up in Yorkshire. So after a chat with each owner they were all available so I set out with the wife on my 600 mile round trip to Yorkshire! Well I only saw two of them in the end, the second of which turned out to be Si's, as soon as I saw it I knew it was the one I wanted. After a demo drive of the Surf by Si, I had a drive, I drove it like a girl, and still do, it will take me a bit of getting used to an auto, and especially coming from a little Mk2 GTI Golf, but I'll get there, anyway the deal was done, I then drove off into the sunset with my new Surf, and I love it!

I've only got one picture of it so far, most of you probably know the Surf better than I do anyway, and Si's got much better pics of her on here already, but here she is for those that are interested. I'll spend the week cleaning her, not because she needs it, Si was one of the few who likes a shiny Surf, but because I enjoy doing it, and then take a bunch more for you guys

I've got a few things I want to do, all of which have no doubt been done before, so should find loads of stuff on the site, mainly looking at cosmetic stuff, as I like the fairly standard look, but any suggestions, ideas anyone's got I'm all ears

To do list (If possible/no particular order)

Fit power folding mirrors - found a set but the guy reckons I'll need some extra loom or something?
Replace spare tyre with a matching General Grabber AT2
Under seal/Paint the chassis - can I use Hammerite for this, I've already got a big tin of black
I've got a few interior squeaks/rattles, want to aim for a silent Surf, well as silent as a 3.0TD diesel can be :P
New steering wheel - airbag might cause issues here
    Clear front indicators
Saw like interior traps that will literally kill, or at very least maim any would be thieves, and yes I'm serious!

Can't think what else, and I've got to get ready for work

    Later folks...

Also more gauges, oil pressure, battery volts, that sort of thing, I love Si's water temp gauge, except when it flashes volts, scares me every time!

Full stainless exhaust, possibly a twin set up

Hey rog, I was thinking about a new steering wheel but was told it would void my insurance if I did.

As for the other bits & bobs It's your own personal preference but the killing of people trying to nick it is a bit psycho but then again I have met you "lol".

Oh & you didn't drive off into the sunset, "it was pi$$ing down with rain.

"I'm missing it a bit now"

Nice truck. Liking the integrated fogs in the bumper.

          Missing front-wing parking mirror

The clear indicators (and side repeaters) you can get from RoughTrax.

I think having the man-traps will also invalidate your insurance? I'd be wary of them going off by their own accord, too...

I was also thinking about the steering wheel, would it void the insurance if I went with a different wheel but it still had an airbag? The one on my Saab Aero is lovely.

I could of sworn it was sunny, that's how I'll tell it anyway :P

As for the missing mirror, I think those funny little mirrors look a bit daft to be honest, if anything I'd be interested in seeing if I can take the rest of the mounting off so there's no sign of it every existing!

I'll investigate the airbag stuff, if you can disable it you should be able to remove the wheel and replace it with something different, as you say though the insurance would probably be void, so it'd need to be replaced with another wheel with an airbag.

Currently I'm only thinking the bumper indicators as they'll kind of merge in with the bumper as it were, might look odd though if I don't do the side ones, and no there won't be any Lexus style lights on the rear!

As for the mantraps, in theory it'd only be the uninvited that would cop it, I'd obviously know they're there, but there'd be that one time I'd be in a real rush forget about them and end up injuring myself, at least I'd know my 'invention' works. Years ago my dad worked with a guy that had an immaculate Escort RS turbo, and he kept having people attempt to steal it, in the end he effectively setup a guillitine within the drivers window, when you smashed in it came down and did its thing, turned out it wasn't strong enough to take the hand/limb off but the last person to try stealling it did leave a lot of blood, admittedly it was all over his drivers seat, but he was fairly happy, got in quite a bit of trouble with the police over it though.

I think you'll struggle to find a new AT2 Rog, GG replaced them a while ago ...

So if I find a tyre place claiming to sell them Bob, should I be concerned that its been sat out in the warehouse for years on end, keep it quiete before someone buys them all up, or just assume the web site is talking rubbish?

I'm not sure what mine are, I don't drive to work so can't easily check, 16s is about all I'm fairly sure of, but their site says they've got these...

I think the new tyre they replaced the GG2 with out-performs the old one in all areas. That's what it said on their site when I looked a while back. They don't look as chunky though.

As I've said in another thread, I didnae get on with mine (slippery when wet) so personally I'd swap the lot if you can and sell your GGs on ebay (I think I got £160 for mine, 4 of).

Jimster - Are you saying you didn't get on with the General Grabber AT2s? And that you sold all 4 for £160? Ouch! Hell, if I see another set for that price I'd snap them up, I've no intention of selling mine, admittedly I've barely used the truck, so can't really comment on their performance, only on their appearance, which I think is great. My main thing is the 5th (spare) would finish things off nicely if it was the same tyre, if I can find a part worn one on ebay, or here I'll grab it.

What tyres you running now then Jim?

                          Running these:

Obviously opinions are subjective, but I find them much better for the routes I do regularly.

Just to be an @rse ...

My 3rd gen had Jap rubber on it and it was ###### awful but I was too tight to replace it - a few years later it hit a patch of something slippery in Cornwall, did a 180 and tried to kill me !

Cue 5 GG AT2's and we've been fine ever since, better grip and braking on tarmac and excellent performance on grass and mud

                            PS
                            They look damned good too

Well I'm with you bob, great all round tyres & very little wear from when I fit them in 2010.
