    Hello all!

I'm a huge fan of the 4runner/Hilux vehicles. I am a member of the toyota 4runner forums in the US and I've just started to learn about that Hilux Surf and it's existence. I'm simply here to compare apples to apples and to perhaps acquire parts for my 1997 Toyota 4Runner Limited.

    With regards,
    Sean

I'm simply here to get a feel of what this similar vehicle is like around the world and if people love them as much as we do. I definitely appreciate the link though!

And by parts for my 4runner, i went some Hilux parts (I wouldn't expect to find 4runner parts here)

Strangely enough the 4Runner WAS marketed in the UK and the Hilux Surf wasn't - most of them were imported second hand from Japan !

Life is too important to take seriously !

Welcome Sean, enjoy the site and ask any questions ya like, as Bob says the runner was the version marketed here in the UK, the Surfs are all imports, not a great deal of difference between the two i believe, mainly the runner was a V6 petrol engine and the surfs diesel, (but i could be wrong)

You have no idea how lucky you are with nice people like Shrockworx, Toytec, bud built and Gobi shipping nice parts locally for your 3rd Gen!

Hi Sean. Wether you call it a Surf, or a 4Runner, it's basicaly the same vehicle marketed in different countries world wide, with different specs. Apart from not getting it with a diesel engine option, and right hand drive, I believe that you, in the states have got the very nearest thing to a Surf, anyway. (apart from the fact that you lucky sods got a leather option.). It's a great truck. No wonder it has such a strong owner loyalty world wide.

Thanks for the warm welcomes everyone. I'll upload pics when I get home.

The thing is about the surf and a runner is the difference between my 5VZE v6 engine, which is reliable, but I think the grass is greener on the other side. I'd love a turbo diesel, but I truly aspire to get a hold of a field monitor. In the states that is the ultimate mod for a 4runner. It's a pain to install, they're rare, and very functional and highly sought after.

Yes, toytec is fantastic and so are budbuilts. We get a lot of cool stuff here. Canada has problems getting them too because shipping doubles the price.

Hopefully I can pick up a few parts, especially a field monitor since there are more surfs there then here (none at all actually, it's illegal to import).

There is a relatively new image of my 4Runner, soon I will have a complete 3.5" lift and by then I'll be finished fabricating my Plated front bumper and new skid plates.

                        Nice and clean looking truck.

A few questions if you don't mind?
Mainly so we can compare relative costs.

How much did you pay for your truck ?

How much does your fuel cost?

How much do you pay for insurance?

                        Yep maybe a bit

This truck was bought new in December 1996 (1997 model) for $52,355.

It has the complete off-road, luxury and towing package.

So I attained the vehicle 6 years ago and I've been driving it for the last 5.
                          It was free to me.

Fuel right now is $3.70 a gallon in my area of Southern USA. I drive an average of 250 miles a week which is about a a tank and a half of gas. So on average I pay about $75 per week in fuel.

Insurance for me, as I am younger than 24, Is about $125 a month. In Alabama, if your young with a 4x4 vehicle they assume you will use it for stupid purposes, such as mud riding and rock crawling.

This vehicle has been babied. I've spent $2750 in repairs in the last 12 months though... so a lot of stuff caught up with me on maintenance. But now she should be able to run for another 180,000 miles!

Our gallon cost equivalent would be $10.30!!!!

He's younger than 24 and IIRC, is that a 3.4V6? So his insurance over here would be... DECLINED?

                              Or at least £4K p/a?
