Well decided to go at it thanks to pics vince posted, started at 6 this morning and finished at 12 noon. Pump all off and rear seal changed, the insides do come out and a little fiddly but if your good with puzzles and have a good memory its easy.
And its true, you do not have to send the pump away for testing or calibration the internals of the pump providing you put all the bits in the right place the internal timing is lugged to match the timing of the pulley.
So changed hard crusty seal, rebuilt pump, fitted all back together abd primed, started straight off and runs perfect.
Not bad for 6 hours on the mighty 2.4!
