£1390 Service bill - ADVICE

I put my car in for service & MOT
asked for the work to be done as cheaply as possible.

they've carried out the work and given me a bill for £1390.

Full service
CV gaiters
exhaust
startermotor

£1390

i didn't approve the replacement of the starter motor.

does this seem stupidly expensive for this work?
I was expecting 600-800 max.
I've not been able to pick the car up as a result. I've paid 600

going to get a copy of the invoice and parts which I'll post.
this seems like fairly straight forward stuff so I'm at a bit of a loss.
I had the car jacked years ago by LA supertrux but the garage know my truck and have even done the CV gaiters before.

If anyone knows about this or is a mechanic who could let me know if they're taking me for a ride, I'd appreciate it.

Someone is having a laugh. Surely they gave you prices for the other work they have carried out like the exhaust replacement?

Starter motors are about £300

Exhaust Full system about £230

CV gaitors about a £10 each

So there you have about £570 already.

Not including what they have included in the Full service

Without the labour charges or other breakdown of the bill it is hard to say.

I think you may have to discuss some matters with them perhaps asking for all the work to be done without getting quotes first was your first mistake .

Sounds ###### expensive..did they keep the old bits, can you see a shiny new starter motor and the receipts for all the bits etc

I wouldn't have done that let the bill get that high without consultation with customer. But can quite easily believe the bill is ok(ish) with some garage labour rates.

Like Shokenore said, if you had a full exhaust its quite easy to start getting to that sort of amount you expected just in parts, no including service and extra labour fitting the above bits.

I'd ask to have a chat with someone in charge, see if you can compromise on some labour, or pay in a couple of installments or something, they should really have called you, especially if you mentioned at the start in needed to be as cheap as poss, not do everything that needs doing regardless of cost.

Mention the starters can be repaired 99% times with a contact set, and you wouldn't have told them to go ahead if they'd told you it was playing up.
