I'm in Denny, Stirlingshire and could take a look at prospective trucks for you. I've built, modified, punished one or two Surfs.
I can check overall condition but can't offer any guarantee in regard to ongoing mechanical condition. ie: it might be fine on the day and a week later the head blows.
I have a fair idea of repair costs/parts as well, replaced most things on a few trucks in my time. So even a truck needing a wee bit of work can still be fine if the price is right.
IMHO I think you should decide firstly what you will use the truck for, what your budget is. I'd always go for a 3.0td in 2nd gen or 3rd gen but if it's a road only truck then the 2.7 petrol is a more refined option in the 3rd gen. this is only my opinion based on driving and repairing these trucks for a few years.
As for travelling to get the right truck, my first one came all the way from Bristol, the latest one from a mile up the road.
