You can use and mix DOT 3 with DOT 4 if the vehicle can accept DOT 3 but don't mix it with DOT 5 as this is silicone based and very different.
Generally recognised the brake fluid in a plastic sealed container has a shelf life of 2 years but if kept in very cold conditions this can decrease.Alan
