  • lost side lights, tail lights and clock lights (update)

    whats the likely cause?

today i removed the spotlights, to give the front a cleaner look and they were rotten, but some how its caused me to lose the speedo lights, tail lights and sidelights, the dipped and main beam stil work.

    are these lights fused?

if so where is the fuse so i can check and go from there, thanks in advance, luke.

found the fuse which was deads, changed it and it died as soon as lights went on, so put a 15a fuse in which died too.

what could be causing this short? is something likely to net be earthed properly?

not and electrical guy, hate them infact. thanks

Did you remove or insulate all the wiring for the spotlights as well?

to give you an understanding, as im shite at wiring.

i took the spots off and there was a large red (assume live) going from each spot to each head light and a small black wire going from one spot and was bolted to the front slam panel, i unbolted the black one on the slam panel and gave it the wimpyest pull ever and it came out, the other end was spliced.

so im guessing this was an important earth now thinking of it but i thought it was only spot light related!!!

also there was a red wire and black wire joining each spot together.
well, that was a bad idea!

OK, what did you do to the red wires that went to each headlight?

A lack of earth isn't going to blow a fuse, just a short as Vince infers.

Don't increase fuse rating on a whim - smoke or fire will be the result.

I don't mean 'short' as in 'not long', I mean 'short' as in +ve touching -ve. ie the feed to your lights touching bodywork.

sorry bud was replying to bushwacker, know what you ment

so it could be possible that one of the red wires floating about could be contacting the chassis somewhere?

Yep, good place to start looking. The spots should really have been fused separately. If you can find an inline fuse for them, pull that one. That should sort your problem.

no fuse atall, they were wired up to main beam not a switch so only came on with main beam and nothing else.

probably should have mentioned that shouldnt have i

                            Does highbeam still work?

Yeah high beam is fine, what do you mean by insulate? Would it be worth while tomorrow to trace them to the lights and removing them completely?
