Conventional wisdom would seem to be, that the automatic Surf, stock ATF cooler, puts additional heat into the engine jacket cooling system making it easier for us to "cook" our engines and perhaps crack the head.
I installed a separate ATF cooler, completely bypassing the stock cooler. I also installed a thermostat and a temperature gauge on the transmission oil line which goes to the cooler.
Over the weekend I dragged a 1500kg "tin snail" from Edinburgh to Coldingham and back. I watched both the ATF temp and the water temp like a hawk. The ATF temp was consistently lower than the water temp. At 55-60 mph in 7deg ambient on a level run, the ATF was around 55 deg, ( 80deg stat fitted) while water was 85. On a good long climb, water at one point was up at 98. ATF sat at 83 which Im asuming correlates to stat opening point.
Without the "tin snail" on a level run at around 60mph , ambient temp 7 deg, water was at 82-83, ATF around 44.
At lower speeds, stop start, motoring ATF sat at 83, water the same.
Im having to conclude that in a stock installation the ATF actually helps to draw heat from the engine cooling system rather than add to it.
