  • Fuel Faux Pas

    Hi there,

Was hoping to "learn from others mistakes" in order to prepare for a potential one of my own. If anyone has ever been as unlucky as to have had a family member or friend (never yourself of course !) put petrol into the fuel tank of a diesel engined vehicle, I'm wondering what the corrective actions should be for a Hilux Surf?

As a new owner of a 2000 model year Hilux Surf with a 3 ltr diesel engine, that is residing in a rather remote location of Paraguay, I wanted to prepare for this eventuality "just in case". As I noted I would be in a remote section of the world with possibly no conveniant internet or even competent mechanic within reach, it would help to know what would work, and what would not.

I have had this kind of thing happen before (twice) with wildy different outcomes. So I'm curious as to how to handle this with the Surf if necessary. I once had a late 90's model VW TDI which the wife filled with petrol. This vehicle required engine teardown, gas tank dropping and clean out and the expenditure of a large sum of money. Years earlier, this same kind of event happening to a rather older US Ford Pick up truck (I was the culprit then) and solving the problem was much easier and cheaper. In this case we simply ran a few quarts of motor oil through the fuel tank with the petrol, then once most of this mixture was expended, we filled up with new diesel and viola, all was well. Of course the engine sounded pretty rough until the mixture of petrol and oil was expended, but it did actually run.

I am hoping that this Toyota may have big enough injectors and a robust enough fuel pump to allow a "fix" similar to what worked with the Ford truck as opposed to the VW. Anyone have an idea?

    Thanks!

When petrol was put in my tank by mistake I just drained the mixture from the tank and put some fresh diesel in.
Cracked off some of the fuel pipes at the injectors and just cranked it over a few times without waiting for the glow plug sequence.
Then just tightened the fuel pipes and cranked it till it started, yes it did cough a bit then it cleared and was fine.
Ran it for a few miles then changed the fuel filter.
