but no mention in the instructions, does it go between the battery pos terminal and the pos (red) cable? no markings on it other than "BATT" stamped on, ta (in antisapation)

Its the winch overload trip.

Like you say, goes on the battery terminal the the power wire bolts to the end.

I don't like them, there's lots of bare live metal on show under bonnet. Try and get something else to do the job or put it in an enclosure.

Thanks very much guys, thought it was some kind of battery protector or winch protector, you'd think the instructions would at least mention it!!
i'll try and fit it in summat, i dont like all that live bear metal either, i'm bound to accidently place a spanner on it ro something,
