Black on red was a rear plate, and being MZU means it's 1986 or older; our current system of year-county-number came in on 01/01/1987. Black on white was a front plate.

There is a listing at the end of this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_registration_plates.

MZU is, according to that list, Dublin. AZU 1 to YZU 999 are between March 1969 and February 1970, which would make MZU probably late 1969.

You could ring your local tax office; they should be able to give you the details, and they tend to be helpful. Try to get the original logbook, too; they were a big brown thing, and you don't see many of them anymore.

I'm city centre if you're coming near the city.

Are you doing Kerry to Longford via Galway?

I'd be going this way: http://www2.aaireland.ie/routes_beta/#

You could get the Tarbert ferry just south of Limerick and head to Doolin, where your friend could get the ferry, letting you head back to Ennis and up to Longford. Worth checking the times; could save you a bit of a trip.
