Forward movement is acheived by thrust from the engine or from the
propellor not from the wheels. When the plane gains speed and the conveyor
matchs it in reverse the wheels will simply turn at twice the speed of the
plain. Take off speed will still be acheived regardless of what the wheels
are doing. I think.
Just what the man said the plane pushes through the air the wheel speed is irrelevant
Propellors don't push air over the wings, they pull the aircraft forward. Unless the propellor is at the back, in which case it pushes the 'plane forward.
It's the pressure differential caused by the shape of the wing and its forward movement through the air, that provides lift.
Actually they do...slightly..thou they are not designed to but as you say props are designed to pull the aircraft thru the sky, Mythbusters did the experiment and the plane took off but that was attributed to the air the prop was pushing over the wings and not forward airspeed
The riverboat example is interesting, but the X-factor is the river acting on the floats exerts FAR more resistance on the plane that the wheels in the example could ever hope to.
But would it fly....it may mean the river boat is exerting more power to keep it self stationary but then so would the conveyor belt with the weight of the plane on it!

The weight of the plane adds negligible friction to the wheels/conveyor belt scenario, the wheels are free spinning, you could keep the plane from moving on the conveyor belt by placing your hand out and pushing on it (assuming the conveyor belt was at a standstill when you started, the inertia would be too much to overcome otherwise).

The boat push the water/conveyer where as the plane engines push air. The belt is meaningless.
Take the wheels off hang plane from a sky hook 2" above the belt open the engines up it move forward. Sky hook on a wire wheel on a belt no difference both are irrelevant.
Well done Andy I tried hard not to get involved but the urge to stop stupidity took over.
