  • Tailgate window weirdness

So, 6 months ago I changed the oil, and the b***y tailgate window packed up - wouldn't go up, just beeped.... so I finished the oil, took it for a ride and it started working again, and has been ever since.

Now time for another oil change - drove round the block, parked up, engine running, opened the bonnet. Left it for a few mins to get hot, got in...BACK DOOR warning! Tried the up switch, beep beep, tried the down, oh it went down. wouldn't go back up.
I wanted to use the truck, so after a couple of hours peeing about to no avail, I reversed the wiring on the motor, and the window went up. No probs, to get it down all I would have to do is climb in the back and change the wiring - one of the perks of gen2 ownership. Finished the oil, shut the bonnet, started up, tried the window, press UP it goes down, press DOWN it goes up....all working again.

It's only the b(*&)!* bonnet! I timed it - turn on ignition, open the bonnet, 20 secs later BACK DOOR light comes on and the window won't go up.
Shut the bonnet, back to normal - great safety feature.

Did you all know about this? and why didn't you tell me?

That Toyota designer must be sitting in his straitjacket laughing his head off.

I reckon someone's stuffed up fitting an alarm, there are no switches on stock trucks to let anything know the bonnet is open.

I suspect you are correct - it has the alarm fitted by the UK Toyota dealer which I have never been brave enough to switch on, having read horror stories about them ont t'internet.

Oh, don't worry there are two, and a great big siren, and loads of assorted wiring, mostly black, and lots more under the dash, and a remote control with 2 buttons....one black and one RED.

Sure, I have a terrible urge to press the red one.

The boot light would come on,on my old runner, but I was not aware of any such safety feature, but then again the back door glass moved when the boot lid was open. The plunger was on the fire wall just above the window screen motor.Looked fairly stock to me. The Surf has no such feature.Personally I thought it was fairly good idea IE if you're pulling the bonnet, you probably want to get some tools out the boot.
