  • Watch help

My mum has asked me to get her Longines wrist watch sorted (It had stopped) and sell it for her, simple task I thought but apparently not so!

I took it into the local Longines dealer in Grimsby (George Hewitt & son) and had a new battery fitted, also got them to authenticate it at the same time and it`s all genuine. Unfortunately they do not do valuations or sell used watches.

We are not expecting it to worth fortunes, it`s a stainless steel version, just a genuine idea of what to sell it for.

Is there anywhere I should be looking to get a genuine valuation of what it is worth or any specialist places for selling watches? I`m not convinced cash converters is the way to go with this one

This is the watch and as you can see my mum has kept it immaculate, even has the original booklet and guarantee cards and the links that were taken out as she has small wrists!

    Any help greatly appreciated

I think Ernest Jones for free evaluations on jewlery, not sure if that covers watches.
    More Lift.
    More Tyres.
    More Engine.

I'll have a word with my brother-in-law. He knows more about antique watches but he might be able to give you a ball park figure and I'll pass on the info...

No joy I'm afraid - it's a bit too young for him to deal with given that he specialises in mechanical watches/antiques.

His suggestion was to take it to an auction house and get them to put a valuation on it...

A high street jeweller like Ernst Jones won't know anything about second hand watches IMHO. You need to go to a proper watch dealer like Second Time Round.
That or one of the big auction houses that do regular watch auctions like Bonhams (although they will take 20% off the top). They (2nd time round) are very helpful - I have spoken to them before - they will probably give you a rough estimate over the phone.
Can't give you much help on price - it will depend on condition and rarity. But you need to ask a specialist.

Thanks for the advise folks, I haven't had any luck locally, as I say I'm aware it isn't going to be worth fortunes just wanted a ball park figure. We're taking the plunge and letting eBay decide what this one is worth
