a set of wheels is 5 wheels not four.
my mate had a crash and the insurance didnt cover because had four wheels 16"
    and the spare 15".
every time i ask someone if they got a set (5) wheels, they look at me like i have got 3 heads.
    what do you think?

Space saver spares are always smaller than the road wheels I would have thought an insurance company would know that.....what has the spare wheel got to do with an accident? claim anyway??

didn't cover him because it wast'n a space saver.
by their point of view you have to have all 5 same or one space saver.
if not, they will not cover

My wheels are alloy 15" 65 profile tyres, spare is 14" steel full size tyre, same rolling diameter and came from the factory that way. The spare does not have "space saver" stickers on it...this is standard from most manufacturers nowadays. The ins company are talking crap, the spare has no relevance in the event of an accident....

i know what do you mean and my friend had it like that, and that's the excuse of the insurance to get out of it, it doesn't matter if the spare make the same rolling diametre
it a shame he lost for that stupid excuse.

Surely thats what the insurance ombudsman is there for ? Did your mate appeal against the decision ?

What would they have saide if he had no spare wheel?

We're all assuming that he didn't have the smaller spare wheel on the car at the time. Even if he was running on the smaller spare it wouldn't make a huge difference if the rolling radius was the same. It's the same theory as a space saver.

If he was driving a 4x4 in 4wd it may make a difference, as a different size wheel can cause mechanical issues. He'd have to be driving it hard and driving it for a while for it to become a serious issue, though, imho.

Totally agree with you, I often wonder why they don't sell sets of 5, particularly for cars like ours that don't have space savers etc

Wheels don't come in sets. There are singular, individual, on their own. If a retailer puts four together and calls it a set of four that's up to him. But for insurance purposes they will replace them on an individual basis... if some pikey nicks the four on each corner and the spare the insurance will replace all five, if you skid into a curb and bust up two the insurance will replace the two.

As for the four 16" and 15" spare, I'd say his problem was not informing his insurer he had fitted non standard wheel.

Some cars dont have "spare" wheels at all. They have a wheel at each corner only, with runflat tyres, and in some cases a wheel at each corner and a can of air or N2 and some sealer stuff.

Dont forget, insurance companies dont actually exist for the purpose of compensating all and any damage caused to or by the insured. They exist to make as much money for their shareholders as they possible can, and if that means they can collect a premium and never pay out on it, its excellent business.

True. The missus Volvo doesn't have a spare just a can of air/sealant.

Having a spare is not an mot requirement. So the spare he was carrying means nothing. If I was carrying bricks it does not mean I'm going to build a wall.
                              .... Which was nice.
