  • 2nd or 3rd Gen?

    Hi all,

I would not mind a bit of advice over whether to go 2nd or 3rd gen - what are the pros and cons of each including engines, LSDs (or not as the case may be) and the transmission (manual / auto) - any differences between the generations?

Perhaps there should be an FAQ sticky on this?

Hmmm perhaps I should have opened the link before thanking you

Ive seen that before and yes very useful for specifications but the question still remains - the differences between the 2nd and 3rd gen please?

Apart from the obvious (looks & age) the main differences that I remember being referred to most often are a different chassis (3rd gen same as a Prado I think) and you can use 4wd on tarmac permanently if you really want to without damaging things (unless you get an early 3rd gen with "council" 4wd).

Try looking at wikipedia and it should give you all the information you're looking for.

              2nd gen: Tailgate drops down.
3rd gen: Tailgate lifts up. (like a hatchback)
2nd gen: Fuel filler cap on driver's side.
3rd gen: Fuel filler cap on passenger side.
2nd gen: Torsion bar springs on the front.
3rd gen : Coil springs on the front.
2nd gen: Steering box bolted to chassis behind front bumper.
3rd gen: Steering rack bolted to body under the floor at the front.
2nd gen: 4WD only on loose surfaces.
3rd gen: 4WD (AWD) on any surface. (Only if multi-mode transfer box fitted, otherwise as 2nd gen)
              2nd gen: No airbags.
3rd gen: Has driver and passenger airbags. (passenger airbag can't be deactivated to fit baby seat)
3rd gens have a slightly longer wheelbase.

i`ve had a second and a third, loved the second but love the third more inspite of its hairdresser image. Get a third and some of these and you`ll be fine

The only thing i will say...The 2nd gen handled better IMO than the 3rd gen (steering box VS steering rack debate). I also find the AWD useful.
I'M ALWAYS IN THE SH'T, IT'S ONLY THE DEPTH THAT VARIES!!!!!!!!

2nd or 3rd: Get an auto. I didn't and have regretted ever since.

I have a 2nd and love it but if I was buying again I'd go 3rd just for the petrol option.

I'll second that. I've just gone from a manual 4 Runner to an auto surf, much quieter, and thanks to the overdrive runs about 500 rpm below the manual box, giving a much more relaxed feel!!

Cheers Bushwacker - just what I needed: Multimode transfer box - optional extra or standard on ssrg etc. Do you get mutimode with boyth manuals/autos?

Multimode transfer box is fitted to the vast majority of 3rd gens irrespective of trim level. IIRC it's just a few of the early 3rd gens that don't and I think they also come with 15" wheels and the smaller brake discs
