  • Another Radiator leaking.

As post suggest another radiator is leaking. Small weep from top tank on soldered joint. I rang Roughtrax where I purchased it from mid 2009 and only one years warranty ! Not trying to rubbish RT but I have purchased a new head in the past and buy all my service items from them. They NOW offer an upgraded radiator stating better quality not like inferior items that leak from top tank etc!!! So were they selling inferior in the past ? I have covered leak in hot melt glue to hopefully give me a few days as Wifeys car stuck in snow at Mother in Laws, and will probably attempt a Solder repair when next days off.

Sorry to hear mate and i aggree, by their own definition they were selling inferior rads, seem to remember they also sold inferior tail light guards, i think it was Jim (scorpion) who got some of them, bad fit and stainless steel went rusty in a matter of weeks, they could have at least give ya a good discount as your a good customer, same all over these days, you have to expect to pay more for cr@p and even more for owt any good, trouble is most stuff these days is imported, hope you get it sorted,

Hot melt glue probably isn't the best temporary repair method. I think it'll melt when it gets hot

Hey, David. I had a similar problem, last September. It was the original Toyota rad. I was lucky, because the local radiator specialist brazed the small crack up for me in situ......If yours is on the soldered joint, a butane torch on it and a little more solder should cure it............

I did think of that but it survived the trip to work OK I dont think it gets quite hot enough to remelt. Just ordered small propane torch and will have a go at resoldering on my days off I think the main problem will be getting it clean enough.....

Be careful, that metal is really thin.

              Take it slowly.

Another leak in another place going to work this morning. Just wondering if I could drive the four miles home at seven with the rad cap off ? Any Ideas, I will fully solder the joint in the morning.

                    In a word
                    No
I would not want to take the risk of all the coolant boiling over.

                      Leaky Rad.

Well got home from work, Just ! And on closer inspection the top tank had came away almost totally from the rad. After loads of brass wire brushing and sand papering spraying with brake cleaner blown out with the airline, I smeared the cleaned surface with flux and soldered the parts together. I know maybe not the best looking job, but done in situ, at least the stalagtights will hold the parts together this time, I hope. System all refilled and no leaks visable, I will take out for a drive in the morning and check. All in all not at all impressed with the quality of build of this one and a half year replacement part. Hope this helps others in the future.

                        Mine looked like that !!!

It started with a wee hole at the top hose end and slowly spread.....and so did my solder ,it ended in a steam bath.

I got a replacement off ebay from these guys almost two years ago now.

It seems to still be ok (touch wood)

Thanks for the link, if I have to buy again thats where I will go. Yes Ian I dont care what it looks like as long as it holds. I was quite shocked when I cleaned it all back how very little solder was actually holding the top onto the rad around the middle area, suprised it lasted this long ! Just been out and tried it, all looks OK so fingers crossed.

Just reading this thread,he seems to sell a window regulator (complete with motor) for a toyota carina for around £36,isnt that the motor that fits the rear door,if so seems a good price especially as its new????
