  • british bike or trike wanted!

as title really i'm looking for either a british bike IE Royal Enfield, Triumph, Bsa, (my right foot is severely damaged so i can't use a right hand brake as on jap bikes) or a bike/car based trike, It has to be cheap or a reasonable price and be fairly close to Devon, The bike can be 250/350/500, it doesn't matter about the capacity really so long as it's complete. As for the trike it can be a project (as long as the frame is done preferably auto as my left knee is gubbed) anything will be considered really, I'm looking to get back on two/three wheels eventually (disability allowing) but for the time being it will be something to keep myself occupied until i'm A, fit enough to ride B, lose the fear of getting hit by a 4x4 again! Money is tight so i'm limited as to what i can spend (my 3rd gen ate a lot of my project fund) I'm not in a rush as i will be using the project to get my hands back in after nearly 30mths without a bike it's time to start working back upto riding again! I'm hoping my back and lower half will be up to it in time

If this is not in the right place (we don't cater for two/three wheels) it can be deleted if necessary.

    I'm a bit confused here

Is it the back brake you are talking about? If so there are a few outfits offering the thumb brake setup at reasonable prices. I know years ago this set up cost a fortune but it's cheap enough now to install. I can look up a few examples for you and post them up.

If it is the front brake and it's your right hand that's fooked then ignore the above

Aye i have looked into thumb brakes, heel brakes, linked brakes but in fairness i wanted a british bike to play with and restore in my own time, It's not just the foot that's foobed my legs and balance are crap as is my back and neck so i was looking at restoring the brit as a lengthy way back into the fold as it were, I'm not even sure if i could ride it but it would double as an investment in the long term. I would prefer to be on a trike as that counteracts the balance issue and it gives me somewhere for the crutches I understand the new technology available for the disabled but, I'm not sure i still have the b:lls to ride a solo again so i'm leaning more towards the trike for fun or the brit as an investment all i need to do is figure which suits me most.

            Hi Tonupteabag
Your request is a bit of a coincidence. I was chatting to a chap at work last week, who lost his father in law recently. He is clearing out his mother in laws place, as she is moving in with him. He has a 1960's Triumph to get rid of, that his late father in law took apart as a project, and never got round to putting it back together. If you are interested, I can find out more about it and the price he is looking for.
            Dave

Might be a bit obvious but have you tried these folks:

If you cant use a right foot brake, how are you going to get on with a right foot gear change? Good luck, anyway - I never use the rear brake anyway...
                      it's in me shed, mate.

i can't feel the back brake with the damage to the instep/great toe area, as the big toe was removed and i have extensive scar tissue with no sensation at all, so if i pressed the brake pedal i just lock the wheel as i can't judge how much pressure i've applied if that makes sense.

My Trike was commissioned n built by a Harley Davidson Dealer.
I would suggest NABD too, I was a member for 4-5 years.... ya don't have to be disabled (to be a member) but if ya are ya may get a grant towards any additions ..
                            Good Luck

Cheers Jess, I hadn't actually looked into grants as i think it's better spent on somebody worse than i, I would prefer to do as much as i can myself as, apart from the finances (i'd figure this out in time) i still enjoy tinkering with anything mechanical so would keep my head active (allegedly)
