  • Bl00dy typical!

On my way back from collecting the Celica seats the turbo died on my Surf.

No turbo light, no power (and I thought it was lacking power normally!), loads of smoke and lots of noise.

The smoke is making the Surf do a passable impression of the Red Arrows, however!

    The question is:

    1. Do I get the turbo rebuilt?

    or

    2. Do I buy a second hand replacement? (Has anyone out there got one? If so, how much and how soon can you get it to me? MOT is due just after chrimbo and the plan was to get it done this week and go & visit relatives next week)

    or

    3. Do I buy a new replacement? (If so, can anyone recommend a suppliers that might be half likely to have them in stock?)

These things always bl00dy happen when you've just spent money on something you wouldn't have bought if you'd known you were going to have to shell out for new bits!

My personal preference would probably be for a new turbo assuming they can be had quickly for sensible money.

The main thing is getting something quick that will do the job for the next month or two at least.

Any suggestions of anything else I ought to check for given the symptoms I've mentioned?

Would be handy if there was a member who regularly pulls out the diesel lumps and replaces the. If there was such a member he might have a turbo or two

I had already had similar thoughts!

As much as anything I just wanted to sample the font of all knowledge out there to see if I'd missed anything obvious that I needed to check before I plumped for a replacement turbo. And float the idea of getting the old one rebuilt/replaced with 2nd hand/new to see what other folks thought.

Sounds good to me. The usual PayPal address? How quickly do you reckon you can get it to me? I don't mind paying a bit extra for guaranteed next day or whatever...

May be a daft question but have you checked the air pipe from the turbo to the intake? i lost turbo a week or two back and the pipe had come loose resulting in no turbo, not wishing to do Vince out of a sale or owt but it were just a thought,
Too young to die and too old to give a toss

Money sent, Vince. Should be with you by the time you read this.

If you need any extra to cover overnight postage or whatever just give me a nudge and I'll sort it for you.

It does indeed! (And the smoke looks familiar too, even if it is just a tad worse on that video)

The turbo turned up this morning as expected Mr B.

With a bit of luck it should be doing it's job sometime tomorrow in a freshly MOT'd truck!

(along with the previously sent alternator)

                            Thanks again.

                              Marvelous!
Hope the weather stays fine for you tomorrow.

I don't know if you haven't replaced a turbo or alternator before, but it helps if you remove the driver's side wheel, and oil filter access plate on the inner wing to gain better access to some of the nuts and bolts.
