  • Engine watchdog

    Hello

I was looking at temperature gauges to fit to my LN130, as want to have a better idea of temps rather than the standard gauge, when I came accross the engine watchdog - www.enginewatchdog.com .

    Anyone had experience of these?

They attach to the cylinder head via an existing bolt and then give you a digital readout of the temp, but the bit I liked was they beep at you if they go over a certain level ( you set this)

Not sure if it is a good idea or if I should stich with a gauge, certainly cheaper.

    Cheers

    Tim

All you need is a good digital temp gauge. Maybe think about cutting some vents into the bonnet and don't obstruct the grille/radiator with spotlights.

      You mean one of these?

Excellent piece of kit, very responsive, and as you can just about see, fits where the front ash tray lived.

The best bit is the audible alarm, no more temperature guage watching!

A Low Coolant Alarm is better, combined with a good temperature gauge.

That looks like a very cheap and quite easy option- may do that first and then think about this watchdog thing a bit longer.

I like the buzzer idea as a warning. I am sure it wouldn't be hard to make something to do this, but my electronics skills end at soldering. If you followed those two surf that went to South Africa - surfing africa - they made up a little monitoring system....

              Hi Maverick

That is just the thing I was looking at- seen a cheaper version on US fleabay that does the same at about half the price, but could be a bit of an unknown.

Good to know it fits in the ashtray bit. Got one of those turbo timers in there at the mo, but could easily shift that.

What is the extra indicator stalk for on your truck?

              Cheers

The combined level/temp kit is very good, but not cheap. I do like it though and have fitted a few for people.

I found this www.cbsonline.co.uk/product/Float_Switch_FLSW , looks like you could make a low coolant alarm with a cheap buzzer/ warning light and this float switch for under £20.

I think this may be the way to go with a good gauge as Nev said, certainly cheaper doing a DIY version.

Love that mod... After fitting an aftermarket gauge with the sensor in the top hose I get an advanced warning of a temp rise with it being at the coolants hottest point. Was tempted to fit another gauge with the sensor in the bottom hose.
One prob could be potential weak points of cutting hose's and fitting sensors.
                      .... Which was nice.

If its not broke don't fix it.
