  • 3 ltr diesel v 4 ltr petrol

I was looking at the specs on the engines in the title and was supprised to find that the 1UZ-FE 4ltr engine has only 2 kg/m more torque than the 1KZ-TE engine, the first producing the max torque at 4,600 revs with the second producing max torque at 2000 revs which I would have thought would be much more suitable for an off roader, admittedly the ps of the 4ltr is 260 but at 5,400 revs ok on the road but not much good when crossing rocky/hilly terain where as the 3ltr develops only 140 ps but at 3,600 rpm much more suitable for the life it could lead. So the 4 ltr for the highways and byways but the diesel for more off road stuff. What are your thoughts?

Well go on, I have to ask; how do you get insurance on one of these?

Insuring a Surf isn't the easiest thing in the world to do and tends to be rather pricey compared to 'sensible' motoring.

Who will a) touch such a beastie and b) for what sort of scary sum?

My insurance went down when I swapped the 2.4 engine for a V8.

Never had any hassle insuring any our Surfs, with lots of mods. Never paid more than £300 for full Comp.

              Insurance comparable to pre-conversion.
As for the figures, yes the new V8 has the punch of an old rubber band. It's like a citroen 2CV pulling a caravan.
Often, as I sit defeated at the bottom of a slight incline, I weep bitter tears for the loss of the mighty diesel lump, and dream of what might have been.

You as well. I often lust after a diesel lump. The old free leeter was , and indeed still is a goer, and Tintin now has custody of it. I prefer the feeling of not knowing whether i might get past milk floats...it makes it so exciting!
                Non intercooled nothing.

Bearing in mind I drive a 3 ltr turbo intercooled surf during the week and at weekends my 4 ltr normally aspirated soarer, this is what prompted me to look at the specs of both vehicles more closely, the weights of the vehicles are not so far apart so accepting the surf has the aerodynamics of a brick it takes off from the line quite quick (people driving 2.4s would not understand this last comment) not because of the bhp but the low down torque capability and gearing , however when the surf has run out of breath at around 90mph my soarer is just changing into 3 rd gear with overdrive still to go and having had it up to mach 2 and still pulling but rapidly running out of road I have never found its true top speed but vastly more than the surf, so all in all its horses for courses not many bridleways you could get up to high speeds but not much fun in a surf tootaling along behind a lorry on a road not being able to overtake.

You should apply to Mastermind, specialist subject ; The bleedin' obvious.

Yes we know you've got a V8 Soarer and an intercooled Surf, you mention it in virtually every post you submit!

                              Me either!

I do have a Peugeot 406 family orientated turbo diesel estate in a rather fetching shade of dogs nob red however, and I have noticed and been meaning to ask, even though it has a smaller engine than my surf it is noticeably quicker taking off in first and second gear, then continues to be quicker through third, forth and fifth gear, eventually topping out at a much higher top speed than my surf, all the while being much better on fuel! Conversely I have found bizarrely it is absolute rubbish off road, believe it or not it struggles with merely high kerbs and moderate puddles!

My question however is this, surely with the facts as pointed out above would I not be better off putting the 406 body and engine onto the surf chassis then surely gaining the best of both worlds and also being as the 406 roof bars conversion is quite popular I would not even have to waste time dropping the headlining as I would already have them!
