The 'Italian Tune Up' definitely works on Italian cars! I service a number of Alfas with elderly/slow drivers. Most of their grumbles about bad running can be cured by a few miles of flat out running. Not sure how you do this with a Ferrari and retain your licence, but with a 1.5 Alfasud it's pretty easy!
I occasionally take the owners along if they are feeling brave. They are astonished how misfiring and a smokey exhaust stops when you have loosened off the rings and burnt out the carbon deposits with 5 minutes at 7000rpm.
BTW, I don't do this on cars which I don't know and don't know the age of the cam belts etc!

A few years ago I managed to completely coke up the turbo on my Fawkus by driving like a saint for a few months (Money was VERY tight). The Ford Stealer wanted to turn me over for £1200 for a new turbo so I found a turbo specialist in Fordingbridge, unfortunately they couldn't save the turbo but were a damned sight more reasonable for a replacement

The one piece of advice the guy gave me was to hammer it once a month - when I told him how many miles I do he changed that to once a week BUT he was totally correct, I redline it once a week for a few miles and she runs as sweet as a nut AND my fuel consumption has actually improved !

Its all the ERG rubbish, especially on diesels, who ever though pumping oily, sooty diesel exhaust back though the intake manifold needs shooting.

        Best off binning the lot.

It's weird, because when Lexurf VI came back from TonyN it seemed to be running (even) better. I can't work out why that might be...

Henry, you appear to be unaware that Blazingsmoke is known to some of the residents as Donut City ...

Yep, I've had to strip and clean the EGR valve on the mondeo. The carbon deposits had reduced the diameter of the air intake by over half. Unfortunately the Mondeo has a sensor that throws the ecu into fault if you remove it.
