  • Sub Woofer

anyone care to shed some light on this issue please?

I have a 450 watt sub in the boot of my surf now the sub is in a wooden box which is insulated etc.
SWMBO really hates the noise? but I don't think it is the volume that is the problem but more of the "air pressure" the sub creates.
Now far be it from me to agree with her and rip out the sub and go back to the frankly crap stock sound would?

having holes drilled in the sub box reduce the "air pressure" from the sub?
    or
do I make a larger box for it to fit into encompassing the wheel arch intrusion?

    Any ideas?

450W is to big for a vehicle if you want to sit inside it and listen to any music. I know it's all the rage to put as big as possible system in, but it's the same principal as having a 60" HD tv and sitting a foot away from it. A large bass speaker should be vented both ways so that the forward air movement (+) and the rear air movement (-) can dissipate .You will often find that a smaller wattage and size of speaker will sound better with a good cab design. Remember that sound is all about movement of air bass and sub bass work by moving large amounts if air slowly (down to 20 hz)as opposed to the top end (20Khz) move less air but faster.

      All the best

        How is it amplified?

          With an amplifier?
          Non intercooled nothing.

I would hope so. I was wondering why there was no control over it, either volume or tone. Not hard to put a potentiometer in line to turn it down if necessary. Drilling holes will not necessarily reduce pressure or do anything much.

My point was that wattage of a speaker is essentially meaningless. Sensitivity and impedance are important. The source, however, would be a very big factor.

                Thanks for the replies
Thrifty. Ain't changing it that would mean SWMBO is right.
Slobodan. Tricky mate liable to get stabbed in my sleep.
Frontman. That makes a lot of sense and is an easy way out.
Sancho.Turned amp output down from 11!! adjusted hpf and lpf and have found the best solution was to for SWMBO truck driving turned the bass down and turned the loudness off at the head unit.
So with a combination of all your answers everybody inside the truck is happy and the for the future have some ideas for a new sub/storage box
                Cheers

Put a switch.on the remote lead so you can turn sub off at times....

I thought the speed of sound in a medium was constant, not frequency dependent?

                        Yes, I was perhaps oversimplifying.

Well my mates sister works in Halfords. She installs stereos and she reckons that it's because -20 hz is moving so much air, that it changes speed. And when you put the treble up, it moves less air at a slower speed. She works with this stuff all the time, so she is an expert.

That must be right then. Never heard of Halfords being wrong about anything. They get all the training, like.

It depends which TLA you're after. You can't optimise for both SQL and SPL.
