+ & - of wheel spacers

what is the + of the wheel spacers? (beside to look better),
and the minuses?
im asking that because the wheel bearings on the back snapped in half and someone kind of mention it happen because the wheel spacers increase pressure on them.
i don't really know, is that true? or is just rubbish? what do you think?
