Good idea sinking it in between the 2 levels... given me an idea!
Reason I was asking about the smoke, is I might put mine at the edge of the under cover area, so I can cook under cover year round... would mean building a reasonable chimney to clear the roof though...
    hmmm....

I love being outside, so I'd use it. Shirley thinks I'm strange though, especially when I'm sitting outside, reading a book, with the chiminea burning, in the middle of winter

That's what I thought you were doing. It's what I would do with that space.

Hahaha Andy, glad I'm not the only one!

Tried BBQing in the snow in the dark yet? Why the feck not? Loads of heat, beer jacket on, and BBQd meat tastes just as good in the winter as the summer!

Wolfracer, yes, do the chimney through the roof. Will give you a great outside area useable all year round, and if you have a stock of wood you will be warm too.

BBQ's. A much underestimated source of winter fun!

There's nothing better than a fire and bbq in the middle of winter, our last and first one of the year was new years eve... hard to buy charcoal though, so stock up now all wanabee winter bbq'ers!

I had one last NYE too!

We lit our chinese lanterns after far too much 'fun' and due to fairly stiff breeze nearly set fire to a neighbour's tree.

As Thrifty said, I used a mix of wood and what little charcoal I had left. You need to be sprightly with the tongs though. Keep the meat moving and you're fine.

Yep, that's the point at which the neighbours began to have an affinity for Shirley's thoughts!

I always have lots of charcoal I even thought about building my own pit, but it was a waste of time. I just stock up around now, when it's cheap

Oh I remember that. One of ours nearly ended up in a neighbour's bedroom!

Yep, I sometimes lay a base of oak sticks, especially if the old ash is soggy wet, helps to heat the charcoal, keeps it out the wet and dries out the ash... also smells devine.

Now, where did those burgers go!

Think the covered thing is the way forward. watch this space.

I ain't got a Surf at the mo, so it'll have to be just the turf. Or Fiat 500 & Turf, which doesn't quite have the same ring...

Remember that paint drawing on page 2?

Well, a year has passed and I've been a bit busy elsewhere!

So, with the longer days i'm gonna try and get a bit more of the patio/covered area done.

I've dug and filled 2 holes each containing a cubic metre of concrete as pads for the uprights and started setting out the roof.

It seems a bit bigger than in that picture i drew!

Next comes the steel uprights, 4x12" 6m beam and 4x10" 5m perlins for the roof to rest on... but that's for another day...
