I think there is some confusion here as to which fans we are on about.

    My 2.4 J reg 2nd gen had:
Air con Rad underslung with 2 fans above it.
Main fan on main engine cooling rad
2nd fan behind main engine fan

I don't understand the air-con function of the 2nd fan - is it there to add extra cooling to the main rad when using the air con, since the engine is under increased load? I cant see it serving any other purpose...?

Right or wrong? (happy to be wrong chaps, but would like to know why!)

My truck dosen''t have any other fans than the main viscous, since its never been fitted with air con. Since I changed my head in Jan,I thump my truck up long motorway drags with the trailer on the back to no ill effect. In my opinion as long as the main system is in good order you shouldn't need it.

            Regards

I feel so much better knowing that a 4runner that didn't have A/C fitted only has the viscous fan.

Yeah I checked the fan motor thoroughly I totally stripped, cleaned and turned the internal rotor around to give the brushes an unworn surface but it wouldn't have any of it. Electricity is getting all the way to the brushes, bearings fine there must be too much wear on the one side of the rotor.

On my 2.4 it kicked in when the temp sender just under the thermostat broke off. as soon as i reconnected the wires, the fan stopped.

                I would leave it!
My 2.4 also had the electric cooling fan when it got hot due to an air lock. Not sure about the 3.0, but when I switch on my A/C I don't hear any fan kicking in, just the engine picking up speed a few hundred RPM.
