I've just spent the last hour and a half searching and can find no definitive answer.

I've recently removed the A/C system but left the small electric fan on the o/s of the rad. in place. However today I had to change the radiator so I checked the motor on the fan and it's def. dead.

    The car's a '95 3.0lt 2nd gen.

I don't want to buy a replacement unless I really have to.

So my question is; do I need it?

Considering the A/C's all gone, or does it act as an engine cooling fan as well.

I'm not familiar with the 3.0 but on my 2.4 I have an electric fan in the same place and it operates via a temperature sender in the cooling system. If it gets too hot, the electric fan switches on.

I have to admit that the only reason I know it works is cos I've tried it by disconnecting the temperature sender...

Anyone else? Can't be too much of a poser for some on here. I have done the SEARCH. Engine manual doesn't mention it.

You don't need it. It's there for the A/C only..............

I don't understand WHY it effects the air con chaps, its not a fan blowing over the Air Con rad...
On my 2.4 it kicked in when the temp sender just under the thermostat broke off. as soon as i reconnected the wires, the fan stopped.

              I would leave it!

I refer my honourable gentleman to the answer I gave some posts ago..

                It's the A/C fan....not needed now.....junk it.

                  Thanks Fellas,

I will as you say Junk it. I've replaced the head and don't wan't to do it again, so please forgive a little paranoia.

Some of the most frustrating aspects of owning these cars are the subtle but important differences between the functioning of similar aux. components and the conflicting advice given in good faith, from owners of either model.

Is it a twin fan? I'm sure it was on my 2.4. When i took my AC set up off my 2.4 i kept the fans and fitted as Aux fans for my first Jimny. Fitted nice in front of Jimny rad. I might be interested in them if your chucking them out. Will need to check first though as my winch is pretty close to rad.

Quite right on the paranoia. Once i had the head done on mine i swapped all the coolant hose clips for jubilee clips,as it one of those sprung clips that came off bottom hose and caused the Surf to overheat in the first place

i have one too. Bt its just sittin there cuz my ac isn't working and i have removed the ac rad. Is there any way i could control this fan from the cab? I want it to help my main rad.

I turned my a/c compressor into an on board air pump for the tyres and just used the a/c fan as a manually controlled 'boost' fan for the rad, when towing. I just have a switch on the dash, connected to the ignition, that supplies a live feed to the fan, when I need it (hardly ever).......simples

The switch in the thermostat housing which controls the thermo fan is a normally closed type. Just change it for a normally open type with the temperature range you want it to switch on and off at, wire it up to a relay and have it automatically switch on.

He said in his first post that the fan was dead??...I was assuming that he had put power to the fan to find that out??

i'd junk the air con rad and stick the fan back in front of the main rad, wire it to a thermo switch and you have a back-up fan just like the far superior design of the 2.4
