  • Urgent help with Toyota Surf 3.0

    Hello,

We've have an '93 Toytoa Surf for two weeks. No problems at all until today when wonder truck has decided to break down with no warning in Sainsburys car park. Which is where it still is.

We think it could be something simple but haven't a clue where to start. I've been trying to find an engine diagram to give us a starting point but having no luck. I was wondering if anyone here knows of where I can view an online engine diagram please?

Any help would be very gratefully received before I have to call the RAC!

    Thank you.

A bit more idea on what the breakdown is or what its not doing will be useful so others on here can give you a few pointers

If the engine runs but the truck won't move, the transfer box is in neutral.
Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

                Hi,

All the usual checks have been done - fuel, handbrake (thanks for that one ) etc...

The engine isn't kicking over at all. The battery indicator tells us we've got over half a charge on the battery, the internal lights and dials are coming on but it just won't start. It tries and then dies.

A friendly guy did wander over with his jump start kit but it really wasn't touching it. We've had no choice but to leave it there over night and get the big boys involved tomorrow with a sensible jump start kit.

The immobiliser issue concerns me - when brought we were told that it wasn't functioning but if it's suddenly decided to kick in we're probably screwed...

Thank you for your help, guys! I know it was a panicky first post but I was (am) really stuck.

Ah, didn't realise an immobiliser was involved. If it's suspected to be dodgy at all, spend £100 and have it professionally removed.

The engine cranks, but doesn't start, is that right?

Or, depending on how well it was installed, just re join the cut wires - it's dead easy once you take the black tape off everything - they'll even be next to each other in the original loom....
Get it working then pay the £100 for a new system.... if that is the problem...

We don't suspect the immobilser; as far as we were concerned it had been completely disabled but it's worth bearing in mind as a potential issue. We'll take the advice and spend the money to have it removed, thank you.

Yes, it cranks once but doesn't catch.

                        or exactly whats going on
It heats up fine, turns once then stops.

Not stupid - the OH is slightly more clever with cars than I am but we're both basically rubbish - I'm more clever on forums then he is so I'm translating somewhat!

Turns once then stops sounds like flat batteries.

did you get all the lights up on the dash when the engine was previously running?

Also if it turns over but fails to start i would suspect fuel ...... the fuel primers have a habit of the diafram perishing on the older 2nd gens letting air in

This bit absolutely screams to me that your batteries are knackered. Assuming that you're referring to the meter on the dashboard, it isn't a battery charge meter - it reads the voltage. From memory it reads from 0-18V. If it's about halfway you're only getting 9V and they're supposed to be 12V batteries.

Once you've got it jump started check whether the alternator is actually charging the batteries at all. Use a voltmeter to test the voltage across each battery when the engine isn't running (should be about 12V ish). When the engine is running this should go up to about 13.5v ish.

To jump start a Surf you'll need to use a reasonably large diesel engined car. If you're trying to jump start it from a petrol engined car it'll probably struggle to give out enough oomf to turn the diesel engine over.
