  • Credit Card Fraud

When I bought my current Surf, I stuck £800 on an old credit card so that if I needed to do the head, I had most of the money there. As you know, the head has now cracked.

Anyway, off to Roughtrax I go. New head, air filter, glow plugs, a couple of washers and the turbo oil pipework. Came to just over £900.

Guess what? When I tried to spend my money, the CC Fraud police wouldn't let me ... I now have to call them tomorrow, to justify my request to spend my money
Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

I had £3,500 go off one of my cards... luckily barclaycards fraud team smelt a rat and phoned me to ask if i had tried to use my card? I said no and the card was blocked then the fraud squad needed me to sign a statement for them saying when i last used the card and what purchases were mine and what ones wasn't, it ended well i wasn't £3500 out of pocket anyway it's better to be messed about a little for the sake of security even if it does balls the day up a little..
I'M ALWAYS IN THE SH'T, IT'S ONLY THE DEPTH THAT VARIES!!!!!!!!

Happened to me recently aswell. They said it was a "batch of cards have become vulnerable" or words to that effect. "batch" implies from one source or even from the bank, I reckon....

This is what annoys me, when you actually need to use your card you can find it blocked for unnecessary reasons. I have a card with Natwest, a few years ago they blocked that card and did not tell me (due to a strange payment). Six weeks later I gave them a ring. No letter or phone call, no message on the online bank service. Although I've found them generally very nice, they have done this kind of thing twice to me now. And one of those times I was in USA and took that card as a backup. I only found out it was cancelled / blocked when I tried to get milk on the way home from the airport, fortunately.

I just remember that the credit card is not your ultimate responsibility. Provided you have not used it with negligence, i.e. left it somewhere with your pin, given it to someone then any theft is not your liability. The money on your card is not yours. You are authorised to borrow that money, this is all. Any claims I have required to make through the credit card company has usually been simple and they are usually friendly and helpful.

I didn't know you could do that, I thought a credit card was for credit.
Did you get any interest on the 800?

(not that the rate is any good anywhere else)

I said to Natwest if that happens again I'll close the account.

If they had made a note of any requirement to inform them first on documentation then I would of course oblige. But as there is none, I do not see the need for inconvenience to let them know you may be using your card abroad. One of the purposes of using a credit card is for protection, I will be using it abroad and whenever I like for its purpose. As a side note, I went to Switzerland last week and amounted around £500 expenses on that Natwest card. No issues at all on any transaction. Just how it should be.

I have been the victim of credit card fraud on numerous occasions over the years. It always seems to happen when I go out on the lash - and what is really irritating is that the perpetrators always turn out to have been in exactly the same bars/pubs/restaurants as me, but I never notice them...

It's the kind of plastic world we live in.

There's a lot of that going on at the moment. It's something I think the police really need to clamp down on. Pretty much every Friday night, someone steals my cash card, takes a hundred quid out my account then puts the card back in my wallet.

Just got back from a week away to find i had been debited 2 amounts to Gumtree.com, one for £13.95 the other for £5.95 on a card that expired at the beginning of the month..... surely if it had expired they should not have allowed the transaction........ Lloyds did say they would sort and reimburse but this morning both credited back from gumtree ?????? wtf
                          Remember arrows are silent.....................
Don't forget to tell everyone its indestructable as seen on top gear.......

Both my AMEX cards have positive balances at the moment. If you pay money in to them, they will hold the positive balance.

                            No interest though...

I'm sure you have thought of this and chose this option for a reason. However my opinion (although may be wrong, as usual!) is that I would store the £800 in almost any bank account with an interest rate. Preferably one with moderate interest. Then, if I did have to cost a new head, provided I paid back the card company within the month I would accrue no interest from them, but have earnt some on the £800 saved elsewhere.
