      My Father in-law was a miner in a Lancashire drift mine. He started at 14. He has told me in the past of the working conditions in the late 50s. Not related to this tragedy he told of "dancing" pit props, when their was a new area cut and the weight of the earth above was settling onto the props, and why they preferred wooden props to metal as you can hear the wood cracking before it breaks. "gulp"
      As all of the facts are not yet available it is hard to comment on the conditions in this mine, but in these health and safety/claim culture days it I would think that there would be regulations that a high risk working environment would have to adhere to.
