now i dont mind giving to charities if its a good cause etc as we do regularly ... but...
8:50pm tonight , the door knocked , i answered and it was ###### macmillans cancer support asking for money ...
is it just me or is that taking the #### a little bit,
our 1 year and our 6 year old are fast asleep in bed and we have a big note on the door saying "DO NOT KNOCK DOOR AS DOG WILL BARK AND WAKE CHILDREN" but still they knock the door and start with the old "sorry to disturb you" malarky..
when i pointed out what the time was and that hes judt woke my kids up, he replied with "were certified to knock doors until 9pm"

i know macmillans do good work but this is taking the mickey a little bit..

Ask if these collectors were "on commission"

I'd be surprised if they were, directly, from any charity.
Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

That is a right pain in the arse.

Door to door and street fundraising are both pains but they still are one of the most effective ways of fundraising for charities. I don't like either of them much but they really do work.

Call up Macmillan and ask to speak to the head of direct marketing. Let them know your area and what happened and they'll feed it back to the agency.

Actually many agencies do give commission. Its all payrolled by the charities just through a third party.

Whether its hourly rate or commission its still nothing compared to the lifetime value that charity will get from the donors. They wouldn't do it if the numbers didnt stack up.

It doesnt sit well with most peoples ideas of charity but then if I give to a cause that I believe in I would be ####ed off if they didnt use the most effective methods to make more money and do more good work.

As bio said, please if you want to give to charity do it direct from wages and sign a covenant so they get the tax relief on your donation.

Most main stream charities will only call you once per year asking if you can up your payment a little.

TBH it doesn't matter what the cause is if they ignore a clear notice on your door (Except in the case of an emergency) then the f@ckwit responsible deserves a serious bollocking !

If it happened to me they'd certainly know about it ...

SWMBO just explained that your average tin rattler gets approx 25% of what they collect. She's spent most of her working life as an event organiser for various hospices and charities and this apparently is the going rate.
She's just said the same thing, if your gonna give to a charity make sure you give it to them directly.
