Impending solar flares

For a laugh I checked into an email I had received becasue i thought it was spam or garbage and found a report from a reputable news agency. See http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/...7746UA20110806 so maybe we are going to end up with massive power cuts etc in the near future. Also from a less reliable source http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencete...ts-MONTHS.html

Would you be able to survive without electric for months at a time bearing in mind that all your electronic stuff would be destroyed and generators probably would not work?
We have a small stream running alongside our property in the countryside so water should not be an issue. Our vehicle is a 1996 3rd gen model with very little in the way of transistors in the electronics I think. Would you be able to run a Surf if all the electronics, i.e. transistors and ICs were affected.
We would probably would grow a lot of veggies in the back garden and shoot wood pigeons and rabbits. Unfortunately as you will not be able to freeze anything, you would need to hunt everyday.
Also you would need to replace your computer once things are back up and running. Kind of makes you think how reliant we are on electricity and electronic gadgets.
Basically we would be moving back to the 19th century and facing even more riots as people get hungry!

I have updated the Reuters link. Unfortunately no joke. Initially I thought it was one of those spam type emails until I checked and checked soem more. It is for real.
If it knocks out electronics most cars will not function, but not sure about a HiLux Surf unless it has an ECU controlling engine and gearbox management.

When my alternator died the other week, when the battery power ran low, the engine wouldn't rev up properly, nor would it change gear automatically. I had to do it manually. Think auto boxes rely on electronics quite a lot..

I had a quick look at that website, but it is beyond my limited knowledge or understanding of the solar system. It could be quite interesting. Seems that they have been sprouting about these solare flares for the past two years so maybe there is something in the Mayan calender abolut 2012 after all.
I doubt very much if thisgovernment or any government would be able to handle any incidents relating to this solar activity if we do end up with communications failure and no power.

I read about this a while ago in the guardian, it's interesting. Can't help but think it's probably one of those millenium bug type scare stories though, I did a marine biology degree and one of the most useful insights I gained was on how science stories make it from journals to papers, and how much is lost in translation!

I agree with you which is why I checked it out and too many reputable sites are saying the same and backing up thier claims with evidence, however no one knows how bad the impact will be. It could be minor which seems unlikely or it coudl be medium or even very severe. We just do not know!
Indications seem to be that it will not be minor however not severe. Thing is if your compute, radio ect are all fried you won't know. Only old valve sets will survive. Hopefully you have a gas fridge?

Science scare stories tend to get scarier as the budget of the department who did the research runs low.

I don't take ANY of them too seriously these days as EVERYTHING has been proven to cause AND cure cancer, and pretty much every natural disaster is foretelling the destruction of the planet.

Oh, and by the way, your Surf will be useless with a fried ECU. Best get a bike
