Easy start for you is to re-gear so the engine is revving right with the bigger tyres ?

I am heading up on Wednesday or Thursday depending on when I get the truck finished. So if you are around late week or at the weekend company would be good, I'll give you a call when I get to the campsite. Cheers Ross

      Cheers safe trip John

Haven't really noticed much difference to be honest. When I first got the Surf it had the Japanese spec hard rubber, then I put my 31" BFGs on and all was well but noticeable. Speedo ran correct though. It's not even far off out now, like 3 to 5mph when travelling at 50mph. All it means is that when travelling at 70 I'm probably doing more like 75. I go through cameras at the speed it says on the dash and have never been flashed but I'm always going a snails-pace faster than the car to the side of me.

ps. I'm not re-gearing. If I went to 35's or upwards then a re-gear would probably be a necessity. But the cost for a re-gear is pretty high when I doubt I'd see any benefits.

A pair of 4.56 front / rear from a manual surf would restore the gearing and cost ~ £200 from a breaker. I'm fitting 4.88's to my 3.0 as it will hopefully help when doing mountain climbs fully loaded.

I think you'd see benefits from doing the swap but that's just my opinion...

            Hmm

What about using the Low ratio transfer gear for this? Or doesn't this help with that kind of driving?

IS that attachment showing engine RPM to gear ratio / tyre size? If so, I've only lost <200 RPMs to go the same speed,

Put your truck in low and you'll have your answer....

                  Yep.

You've gone from 29.5" tyres to 33" tyres which is nearer 300 rpm. While you've only lost 300rpm you've also made your engine 'bog down' or struggle more to deliver the power to your wheels.

It's your choice though - I just found it weird that you were suggesting fancy exhaust mods and intercooler type stuff when the obvious thing to change was your gears.....

You could be really anal about the whole thing. Personally I don't care so much about MPG, I just enjoy driving the Surf (:
I'm trying to do it on a budget, how about if I get a couple of battery fans from the pound shop and strap them to the air intake and another one across the exhaust, would that work?

My overall fuel capacity is 280Ltrs. I have loads of veg, really I want to avoid buying diesel. Do you think I will have enough fuel onboard. I have never been passed Manchester and I have been told that Scottish roads are very different to our motorway systems down south. Ideally I would like to come back via wales, as I would like to climb; Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon. My total Milage would be around 1300 miles. If I was to average 22 mpg I would need 268Ltrs, leaving me 12Ltrs to play with which is quite tight. My trucks engine is in reasonable condition. I have never really used the truck before for distance journeys, is 22 mpg a sensible figure or should I expect less on this type of journey?
Ya may need to add about another 60-80 litres of Veg to ya purchase !!
Good Luck n enjoy ya Trip

I read somewhere that with racing motorbikes they angle the exhaust tailpipe up towards the back of the rider because apparently there is a vacuum in that area that helps to draw exhaust gasses out allowing gasses to exit more quickly.

Is it fact or fiction??....You decide
                              Now it's time to play!
